Guys,

I am looking at redoing the front suspension on my 71 Charger and have two questions:

I have two new (actually they are about 20 years old, but unused) tie rod ends from Just Suspension. How do I tell if they are inner or outer?

I also have a 20 year old part number 5-7101 from Just Suspension. What the heck is this for? It looks like four bushings and two shafts.

Thanks in advance.

Greg

inner will have a different thread than outers, I forget if it's the inners that are LHT or the outers.

4 bushings and two shafts are probably the end links, a pic would help.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

I too don't remember how Ma did it & obviously you need a leftie and a rightie in their respective ends of the sleeve(s) cuz as you know the ends are threaded differently but you can screw em in the sleeve then install/flip the sleeve assy either way. The left hand threads have an unmistakeable angled twist to the threads that you cant mistake when you see it whereas righties look straight (no angle). alignment techs are used to seeing em either way & they'll grasp which way to turn the sleeve in a heartbeat (if you are haveing it done at a shop). iirc the lefties on the assy line went on the left side of each sleeve but I cant swear to it.

Outers are usually the right hand threads.

The differences between the inner and the outer tie rod ends are the threads that go into the adjusting sleeves, one will have right hand threads, and the other will have left hand threads. I sure can't remember which was right or left though. Once the tie rods are put together with the sleeve an assembly, it will fit either direction, though there is probably a "proper" orientation. Thanks everyone, good call on the tie rod threads going in different directions, I probably wouldn't have thought of that.

Right out! The opposite of what we said in the 70's.
