Was browsing online and saw Sun had started making the original Super Tach and the one before that. I thought how cool would that be in my project road runner. I see pics online and the face says Sun Super Tach, but none available.. Summit and Jegs have the Bosch Retroline that is identical but doesn't say Sun Super Tach, just RPM X 1000. What gives? Did Bosch buy out Sun and it's a licensing thing or what? The P/N for the unobtainable one is SST802R. Thanks!

Bosch now owns Sun (along with Kent-Moore, OTC, Robinair, Actron and Miller Tools the Chrysler dealer essential tools), the deal happened in 2012. Previous owner was SPX.

Actron was the maker of the Sun tachs we have all seen for decades, having bought the rights when Sun (the company) was sold off years ago (Snap-on bought the Sun big box testers and owned the license to the Sun name). They (Actron) sold two lines of tachs, one Sun and the other Actron (and a third that didn't go anywhere called Faze).

Anyway, what you are seeing for sale now are Bosch made Sun tachs. Still the same design, made in a Bosch plant. The two retro tachs made by Bosch can be identified in that they do not have the Sun logo, just a blank space. Good luck finding a newer tach with the Sun logo in the retro style, hard to find and have gotten very expensive. If you are not hung up on the Sun logo, these tachs are fine and are a direct replacement for the Sun tachs of the '60's and '70's (but without the need for an external trigger).

Here are the Sun Retro series tachs prior to Bosch involvement. These are not sold as this part number anymore.

Contact Jerry Valentine. He's out of the Seattle area. He does solid state conversions and specializes in Sun Tachs. He also sells tachs so if you want the real McCoy he's the guy to call.

His e-mail is catclock@msn.com

I sense an opportunity for one of the companies that re-faces old-car gauges, if they can use the Sun name.

Thanks for the info guys. I kinda figured it must be a licensing thing. Amazon and Summit actually still show it online, but NONE available. Both the retroline tachs would look killer in a vintage car, but having the Sun Super Tach logo would be that much cooler. Topside, you may be on to something... How about a rub on transfer deal like ECS does with the VIN plates?

I haven't talked to the guys at Bosch in a little while, but my guess is that they stopped using the SUN logo because either they didn't want to or weren't able to renew the license agreement with Snap-on. SPX made the tachs and had the license agreement with Snap-on in place for years (originally granted to Actron which SPX bought in the early 2000's), the license agreement went a few more years after it transferred with the sale to Bosch.
