maybe you can see that vaccum head is right up against top heater hose and vac hose is touching the heater hose, what can i do to fix this i can move vaccum head backwards, but that throws timing way off and want crank,i see on some cars that vaccum head is setting more up to the top than mine.thanks

Aftermarket distributor? You can move the plug wires a space or two and turn the distributor.

the intermediate gear isn't located properly. with #1 cylinder at TDC firing the slot in the gear's shaft should be parallel to the camshaft. this will correctly orientate the distributor.

As said you can move the gear or the plug wires. The wires would be easier.

It will orient the gear but the distributor will still turn to any position you want.

A better pic showing the gear alignment too.

Per the diagram I would want the can pointing straight across over to the drivers side & the #1 plug wire clocked just "above" (in the pic) the forward cap clip holddown. first turn the dampener to your desired initial such as 15 BTDC #1 firing and you want the magnet dead even with the tooth. confirming that the springs are retracted, you want the rotor near under or slightly CCW (even better) from dead center plumb with/of the center of the #1 cap terminal bulge. As said start with the slot parallel to the eng CL then move if needed (& it can be anywhere) & you can actually have the can anywhere it has room to be turned & doesn't hit anything/#1 plug wire anywhere to start but maintaining the OE order lets the plug wires lay the neatest (to some extent) & helps prevent future mistakes (always a good thing).

I've never heard the vacuum advance canister called a vacuum head before.

It may be easier to switch the wires around but it will be a problem for the next bloke trying to fix under the hood.

I used to worry about lining things up. But when I saw how easy it could be done, it makes no sense to move the wires around. The key is that the intermediate gear can be turned quite easily in the backwards condition with a flat bladed screwdriver. So with #1 piston at TDC on the top of the power stroke, turn the intermediate gear until the slot is pointing in the right direction.
Then install the distributor with vacuum advance canister pointing in the right direction and the rotor pointing at the #1 spark tower. This should be quite close. Then rotate the engine two complete revolutions and stop about 10-15 degrees ahead of TDC. Line up the pickup and the nearest tooth on the reluctor and tighten everything else. Put in the wires according to the diagrams and you're home free.

The key really is moving the intermediate gear by rotating it backwards.

R.

if you move the dist CCW then you move the wires CW. If you move the dist CW then move the wires CCW. EDIT easier visualization: the #1 plug wire is above the rotor/you want to maintain that. If you twist the dist (cap) to the right (CW 1/8 turn) then you need to move the plug wire(s) back to the left (CCW) to get it (#1) back to where it was (above the rotor). If you start out with the magnet dead even with the tooth before you first twist it then you can judge the 1/8 turn dead on & have your timing very near what it was, then start it for a final adjustment with your light.
