My nephew is a brutally fast swimmer who has a very good chance at being picked for the US Olympic team in 2020. Even now, at 15, he has been accused of doping because he routinely wastes older swimmers in the 200M butterfly (his best event).

Widespread doping has made it very difficult for "clean" athletes who dominate in their fields because they will always compete under a cloud of suspicion.

The "Lance Armstrong" effect. Vehemently denied doping for years and years, and personally ruined several people who were accusing him in the process. We all know how that ended up.

iagree

The Russians are our friends. Heck, I even remember some guys posting pics of Putin in the 'current events' forum last year as an example of a glorious 'manly' leader...

Can't see why anybody would object to a little doping in the Olympics or a little hacking here and there... give the poor country a break. They're good guys.

Yep, Lance Armstrong a perfect example of a not so fair or accurate system.

Recall what old Smokey Y used to say, 'Everyone Cheats"

By the sheer numbers, the USA is way out in front, with 18 athletes caught doping at the Summer Olympic Games. Second place goes to Russia, with 14 athletes. In fairness, the focus on summer Olympics means the recent Russian doping controversy is excluded — the country’s suspected dirty athletes weren’t allowed to compete in the first place, and doping violations in Sochi don’t count towards this graphic.

Obviously, the US is also at a disadvantage because it consistently brings the most athletes. Which country brings the most doped athletes per capita would be an interesting calculation. My gut says that Bulgaria, with nine athletes caught from their relatively small country, might be in the lead.

In any case, it’s a good reminder that while the focus on these Olympics has been on Russia’s doping, there’s plenty of other athletes (and possibly national sporting bodies) that have tried to win at all costs.

My family background is Ukrainian, so I’m obviously not a big supporter of Putin or his methods.

But there’s far worse people who should of greater concern to us leading foreign nations right now - Xi Jinping for example. And yet we continue to fall all over ourselves to do business with that gangster state. Matter of fact, the man-child who “leads” our country has expressed admiration, and is over there right now trying to broker free trade with people who reject the very idea of freedom.

Well Mexico can no longer compete in the summer Olympics either... everyone that can run, jump or swim is already in the United States!

Totally agree with all points.

I think the fundamental difference in the Olympics ban is that the Russians concocted such an elaborate plan to hide the doping when the Olympics were in Sochi. FWIW, I think all countries have doping athletes, but this plan took it up a notch or two that the others hadn't (or at least weren't caught doing it).

In a non-Olympic context, "We" (Canada and the US) do business with lots of regimes in the world that are really bad people on a number of levels. In most cases it is beneficial financially, so we just look the other way...

the reason they got banned and no one else has yet is because the country it self was involved not just some rouge individuals but the country was doing it in mass. They had a whole in the pee room they would pass the pee through so the athlete could get good pee for the wizz quiz

That sounds like what my buddy's job was for this big trucking-heavy equipment company. His main job was the designated pi$$er so the hard to find operators keep working. 100% true. Eventuly he got diabetes and had to resign. Boss was interviewing new drug free pis$ers the next week.

Who cares who gets banned. The olympics have gone way out of control with the demands of monetary spending for each event. The simple solution for me is that I do not waste my time watching the olympics.

I only watch a couple events. Too few to even remember which. Like curling, and some other one or 2.

Oh, and summer Olympics??? I don't remember now that they don't have soft/baseball.
