I still buy vinyl. I can't stand CDs, looking back I wish I would've just kept buying vinyl instead of getting sidetracked by worthless CDs.

Coo present! I have a record player and enjoy listening to records. It is a much more interactive experience than listening to a CD or Pandora. It can be a pain if you're hosting a party...it is an activity in itself.

I buy vinyl '45s regularly. Picked up several for punk collection yesterday - Plasmatics, Richard Hell, and The Dead Boys. I also collect new vinyl 45s by bands like the Rifles, Crystal Castles, and the Horrors. I have all this stuff on CD / MP3, but like owning the original releases + the cover art. As for LPs, I have been building my Ramones collection with live recordings on vinyl.

Yep, got the family turntable when Dad died. It's older than me (pics to prove it). Still plays excellent.

Also got the marantz 1200 amp and a couple Rtr speakers.

Currently put away while we remodel the basement...

500+ albums
Kenwood table (nothing fancy here, see below)

Grace F9 cartridge. The cartridge is the heart of vinyl sound reproduction, if you skimp here it's all downhill.

Sansui AU7900 amp--the same amp that John Cusack's charachter owned in "High Fidelity"
Not that it makes it a great amp, but it's a great amp.

Stephen's Trusonic 12" coaxial speakers. And a satellite set of Trusonic 8" speaks.

Stephens was an engineer for JBL back in the 40's. Instrumental in "voice of the theater" stuff. Spun off his own company--superb stuff.

4500+ LP's, about 1000 45 rpm singles, and a touch over 3000 Compact Discs, many of which replace seldom played scratchy, old vinyl.

Turntable is a rega planar 3 with a stock tone arm. CD player is early '90s vintage NAD. (From when the stuff was still Brit made.) I only listen to vinyl when I've not been able to replace it with CDs. I have a friend that owns a small recording studio who from time to time converts old LP's for me, removing the surface noise.

I don't buy the whole hipster "return to vinyl" fad.

I have a Thorens TD-160 turntable hooked to a different rotation of Sansui equipment. Speakers are ESS.

I love listening to vinyl on vintage equipment.

I don't have the attention span for 45's but I have lots of 70's punk (including the Voidoids and the Dead Boys), rock, some new wave, blues and older rap on LP's. Collection is up to ~300 at the moment.

Sounds like a fine collection!
I have always been a fan of the 7" single since I was really young. It started with the German relatives sending us records. My older sister started collecting 45s when she was 13, coming home with something new every weekend. When I started building my own collection, I gravitated towards the 7" single for a couple reasons. One was that in the single represented the "hit," or the very best song the band had to offer at the moment. In some cases, it was the bridge between starting out and making it big. They were jump starters for independent bands, or ways of testing the waters for major labels before committing to a full LP. More than any of that, it was an easy format to carry around. We had new music parties, and the single was a nice compact item.
I collected 100s of LPs as well, but ending up selling them all to help pay my way through college.

I still have a Thorens turntable with a set of Infinity Reference Studio Monitor Speakers. Have Audio Research (tube) Amp and Preamp and a ship-load of albums some direct to disc recordings. My brother-in-law had an audio component store from the late '60's that started and ended at WVU in Morgantown 45 years later. He had for a few years two stores in Pittsburgh near Pitt University and he majored in music when he was in college. He was a great audiophile and knew a lot of people like Henry Kloss of KLH, Advent, and Cambridge Soundworks. I watch him walk into the main listening room and tell his sales guys to fix a set of high end speakers they just set up because they were out of phase. Well the bets were on for lunch that he was wrong, he had a great free lunch later that day. I learned a lot from him on what true sound reproduction was really about.

Ahhh yes the "sound quality" argument...

Imho there's lots of music that does sound better on period equipment vs digital remastered.

I'm no fan of Pink Floyd On vynil, CD is better. But early Jeff Beck really does sound better on vynil. The Ramones are best live on vynil. Frankly I'm not a big fan of most live recording or even concerts but for punk it just has to be raw.

Dad had some"voice of the theater" speakers growing up. I'd actually curl up in the open space in front of the cones.... They were take outs from the Cleveland Agora.

When he passed, my brother took the Crown amps (MRI amps actually, no distortion allowed and probably$5000 each if you had to buy them). He's was an audiophile. At one point we had speakers that were rated for 1000 watts minimum! That's what the crown amps ran. Playing the opening of Dark side of the Moon literally shook the neighbors house!

But I grew up listening to 60's rock and that was what I grew up with. And I reminiscing about those little pops and hissing you get from vynil. It just fits.

The CD vs vinyl was a good argument for vinyl at first or in about the first 5-10 years but not anymore. Some really great CD recordings now.........but as far as dynamic range, hands down still goes to vinyl.

Sadly with one ear gone and the other at half mast, listening is not the same anymore. My hearing aids distort the sound so bad I take them out then crank it up till the room shakes just to hear most of the song. PTOTECT your ears, tremendous loss for me.

I'm more about the personality of the recording matching the era. No doubt newer is clearer and more pure sound. But back when these songs were recorded, the hiss pop and other anomalies were accepted and in some cases worked with. For example, do you think adding distortion to an electric guitar was an accident? No they were playing to limit of the recording equipment and adding sounds that hit you in the heart.

Dad was a fan of syntheithised music or pure sound as he called it. One of his favorite songs was Manheim steamroller version of Carrol of the Bell. Sure perfect Bell sounds but actually my least favorite. Heck I like Peter Griffen version better! TSO really knocks it out.
Think about old stuff like big band, swing of even Spike Jones? Would it feel the same?

Anybody remember the Cheap Thrills album? There's one song which name escapes me right now, but you hear the sounds of the audinece the clink of silver ware and glasses, some murmured conversation, take those away, make it just a pure music recording. You lose so much.

I have a decent JVC turntable with a quality needle, Harmon Kardon receiver, and B&O speakers. It isn't Carver, but it sounds way better than my old pioneer receiver/speaker combo.

My vinyl runs the gambit between The Cars, the Meatmen, Merle Haggard live, the Modern Lovers, Harry James, old ZZ Top, Junior Brown, even some Hawaiian island music.

Nice Set up, I run a Thorens TD-160 with Shure Cartridge. The set-up has Yamaha NS-1000M Studio Monitors, incredible clean sound.

I still have the Marantz 6270q direct drive turntable that I got in the late 1970's when I was in high school. A few years ago I had a speed issue but found a local guy that repairs high end equipment & he fixed it for under $100. He told me when I came to pick it up that 3 people had wanted to buy it when they saw it....LOL

If you need a turntable this company has been around for years & offers a USB model that can record to digital files. They also sell an adapter to connect a non USB turntable to your computer & I plan to get one. If I didn't get my old Marantz repaired I would have bought the turntable they sell.....

i have an old Empire 208 table with a newer tonearm. sounds nice.
the whole system came together when i got a nice tube phono preamp, built a stepup box so i could run a low output grado sonata cartridge, redone by sound-smith or something like that.

i built some high efficiency speakers, similar to old Klipsch, Pi Audio.

i use a marantz 2220B for an amp, got it off craigslist for $75, 20 watts is plenty with my speakers.

Vinyl and Cd's are different, sometimes the CD is better, sometimes the LP is better. I don't do much comparison of the same recording between LP and CD on my system they both sounds pretty similar. LP a little more organic, CD a little airier.

I usually just buy LP's though because most everything I buy is available that way now.

Some really sweet rigs in here! Agree completely with A12, the dynamic range on vinyl is clearly superior. SACD's match vinyl if I remember right but the format never really took off.

That is a cool story, and makes a lot of sense. It's a lot easier to haul 45's around vs. milk crates full of LP's. The 45's are much cheaper to collect as well. I do have some MC5 45's someplace but they never get played, have them more for the novelty factor.

I'm not playing them yet, but hopefully by the end of the week.

I brought this back from my moms over the summer and am currently restoring it. The new tubes and knobs should be here tomorrow.

Dad bought this new in 1949 just before he married mom. It was there sole evening entertainment until 1951 when they bought their TV set.

It only has 2 speeds 78 and 33. I have a stack of mom and Dads 78s and my old records so it looks like it's either going to be Big Band or Rock and Roll up

That's cool Feets!

Is someone manufacturing tubes? I thought they were pretty darn hard to get--at least some of them.

In the day, they were. Today, many tend to sell for big bucks. In the late '90s I sold my SubPop Nirvana single (their very first one - Love Buzz) for $500. Today, it's worth three times that amount. Ramones 45s tend to sell in the 25-75 dollar range, and sometimes more depending on the country of origin. Those first release 1970s punk singles have become really collectible, and the prices are getting a bit silly.

I'm not feets grin

I don't know if anyone is making new tubes but it only took about 15 minuets to find all 6 of the tubes the unit takes. 4 NOS and 2 (supposedly) tested and good. All were under $10 each including shipping.

I even found the schematics and repair pamphlets for them.

I have a linear tracking pioneer that I one day thought worth keeping. Since scoring a mr78 tuner, c27 preamp, mc2205 amp, and Revox B77 I've been re-thinking that. Earlier this year everything was cleaned up with deoxit, tested and hooked to a old pair of infinity speakers and I decided music was designed to be a scale, not 1's and 0's.
I'm now on the fence to put this into service with a dac (for dvd's and sat tv), run two systems, gear up for two systems (new analog turntable and new speakers), or off everything and be done with it. The older I get I want things "right" or "down the road".

My Dad used to rock out all the time during my childhood. He'd play his records and also had a reel to reel. My brother has all of his records and recently bought a record player to listen to them all again.

I can't remember which record player my Dad had but I remember his reel to reel was a Pioneer, his speakers were Venturi Bic America's and he always had Nakamichi receivers and amps. His Bic speakers sounded great for years, so much so that I bought a set of my own when I was a teenager and they still sound great today 20 some years later.

One of my Dad's Zeppelin records skipped on one song; to this day, every time I hear the song, I hear the sound of the skip in my head. Weird how things like that stick with you.

I just got into vinyl that last couple of years. I set up a listening system in our family room that consists of a Carver amp from 1990, a Technics turntable from 1986 with a Shure HE cartridge and a pair of Mirage FRX7 speakers from the early 2000s.

My Thorens is pretty sensitive on a flat perfectly balanced surface with a granite slab, how do you get it to play sitting at a 90 degree angle. That's pretty impressive.

I still have a bunch of old vinyl. I've been packing it around in boxes for 20 years. I haven't had a turntable since about 1997. Recently I found a copy of "Robin Trower Live" on vinyl and my nephew gave me a new in the box turntable. I moved into a new (for me) house and spent time hooking up the old stereo system including the new turntable. I got that pristine copy of that live record out and preceded to cue it up. Well, I was pretty disappointed because the turntable was too fast and it sounded like the damn chipmunks had infested old James Dewar. No timing lights, no nothing. a 45 and a 33-1/3 button. DAMMIT! I thought about it for awhile and realized the turntable was belt drive. I did some creative gear changing and WHOLAH! I can listen to my albums again! Some of them aren't as good as I remember. Kind of like restored muscle cars! fart

LP's, 8-tracks, Stereo or Quad.

Trying to get an Elcaset deck to play with for a little bit.

I got a nice 70's settup for my garage at a yard sale for next to nothing last summer. (sansui reciever, record player, pioneer equalizer, High end sharp cassette player with analog meters, and 8 track tape player.

Can't remember the name of the record player but you can tell it's nice. I have a 1980 fisher CA-880 which puts plenty of power but can be had for a lot less money if you look around.

The only problem was that this beast turned out to be worth to much even needing gone through so I put it on ebay. I couldn't believe the specs. on this thing. (I can't believe it is bringing this much money and still needing to be gone through)

I got a B&O 4002 linear tracking tt quite a few years ago with the matching receiver for 50 bucks. It needed a good cleaning and lubrication and it worked again. I bought the din to RCA plug adapter off eBay and haven't really used it. I also have a Harmon Kardon belt drive high quality table I got just before I lucked into the B&O. I bought boxes of records back when everyone was switching to CDs. The truth about why records SEEM to sound better is because of the loudness wars that took over the music industry. They found numerous ways to compress the digital sound till the levels stay at 0db any time music is playing. The dynamic range is gone and all that's left is loud mediocre sounding music that sounds OK on cheap setups and speakers. A early cd will have a super wide range of sound levels and dead quiet passages between tracks, newer CDs just hit 100 percent level and stay there till the music fades. I used to buy and listen to records and even bought the half speed mastered mobile fidelity labs records because they were the best sounding, highest quality vynil you could buy. The first CDs I heard were mind blowing they sounded so much better than the best records I own, now they are just loud and over recorded, they only care about sales, not sound quality, and most listeners don't have a clue how bad music sounds now after getting used to crappy low bit mp3 music. They can't compress records as far as they can CDs and digital music so a record may sound better then the same music on CD but it's the bad mastering they now do, not the digital CD.
Now of course if you want to listen to records the best quality table and cartridge will get the best sound from them but you'll still be dealing with surface noise and random pops and clicks because it's analog and super easy to damage and will have minor flaws even when unplayed perfect condition. If any of you hear a hi definition audio track that is properly mastered with no compression you'd be blown away how sweet it sounds.
