So, I've given up on trying to build the engine for my truck, and am 'calling in the cavalry'.

I took the boxes of parts down, and my builder nixed my $100 Comp Cams timing set - he doesn't like the (iron or sintered steel?) crank gear. Says they tend to be a little loose on crank snouts and fret under use w/ medium/heavy valve spring loads.

Guy has been building engines for about twenty years, and his employee for about 25. Think they may have had more experience watching failure patterns than I have.

The cam in question is a CAST single-bolt billet Engle roller I bought from Cab Burge about a year ago, 262 @ .050; .630" (with my HS 1.6:1 rockers). Springs are Herbert HERS637 doubles (200# seat; about 540# on the nose).

After spending a couple HOURS sanding burrs off the Comp cam gear (wish I'd saved that receipt!), just to have it 'nixed', I don't think I want to buy another Comp set.

Looking at the 440 Source (made in USA) set w/ the upgraded Rolon chain, and the Cloyes billet set shown at Summit .

Okay moparts faithful, what are your thoughts?

Seduce the attractive, and charm the rest. ****** 489 C.I.D., roller cam, aftermarket heads, tunnel ram, stock '54 Dodge rear axle assembly: which of these doesn't belong?

The last Summit brand timing set performed well, and had no signs of chain stretch after 60+ passes going mid to high 4's in the 8th mile. It has Made in the USA on the gears, which are billet. Had a torrington roller bearing for block wear. The chain was a DiD Brand chain which are very popular with dirt bike racing chains etc. But this was a 3 bolt setup.
IMHO
all of them stretch some, I install the cam one deg tighter than I intend. My new engine is a 572 Hemi that I have some money tied up in already. Solid flat tappet 3 bolt cam..

My timing chain choice...
a $45 Comp Cams version.. Non Billet gears, just good old Heat treated version, with a pre stretched over sized roller chain..
It will be the last thing on my mind when I drop the hammer on it.

I double pin them . I add an extra pin and place it so the tension washer covers it. Not really too hard to do and I sleep a whole lot better in a race engine situation.
