I have a 2005 Dodge Ram quad cab 4x4 truck. It has the 24 valve Cummins engine, and an automatic transmission. While I was doing a routine trans service on it,I found what appears to be pieces of a large snap ring. By putting the two pieces I found together it appears to be about 2/3 of a five inch diameter snap ring. Any ideas where it came from? The truck drives, and shifts fine. How would these end up in the pan? I put the filter in place and reinstalled the pan,but I don't want to put the Mopar ATF 4 in it if it needs to come apart. It costs about seven bucks a quart, and takes twelve quarts. I hate to waste the fluid if the transmission needs to come apart.

Forward or direct clutch snap ring, if 2/3 is in the pan, you should pull trans and replace the snap ring before the rest comes out and damages something. A PITA, but fairly low cost as a DIY. If you are lucky it will be the forward most clutch, it’s easy to get to. Are you running a shift kit? I ran one in my 01 for awhile until about 2” of the same snap ring wound up in pan. I pulled out the kit and it’s running fine, but I plan to pull mine apart soon and freshen it up. Good luck!

From what I have read on line it is the overdrive clutch snap ring. It is a seven dollar part that cost seven hundred dollars to replace. I guess it is a common problem, which can be repaired by removing the overdrive unit from the transmission, I read that if this is not done correctly, then the spring in there can take your head off and damage the piston too.

That damn snap ring was the demise of my 2004 Ram. When I had the trans rebuilt after I blew up the Cummins the guy did not know anything about setting-up the overdrive and just tightened it down. The snap ring broke at about 200 miles and the overdrive went out. I couldn't get back to him because I was on a 3000 mile trip towing my enclosed trailer so besides the huge fuel mileage hit other parts of the ring ruined the trans and overdrive unit. After getting it rebuilt again I bought a new overdrive unit from Chrysler, $1000. It was still never the same since and finally the trans went again. Terrible design that is all I can say...

It was the overdrive snap ring on mine, I found a piece about 2 inches long, when i rebuilt it the snap ring was in about 6 pieces, it ran fine like that for over 5 yrs. Not sure how many miles you have on the trans but if it works fine i have heard alot of guys just pull th od housing off and fix that.

Just pull the transfer case and then the O/D unit. Take the whole output shaft assembly out (you will need to remove the clutches and steels and release the snap ring under the small rectangular cover on the outside of the case. Now you will have to have a press and a fixture to press the hub down to remove the outer and inner retaining rings. When you release the press it will come up about 1.5 inches or so from the installed position. Just be careful or have a trans shop perform that operation for you. I have yet to see one take any bodies head off though.
