A friend came by today with his Bro-in-law who had just bought a 2015 Chally Hellcat. They asked me if I wanted to drive it... Duh! I took it to my favorite test and tune location and gave it a hard launch, whacking the paddle shifter till fourth (135). Impressions: Now I know why knuckleheads with no seat-time/experience wreck them! I have a 700 horse 528 gen 2 Hemi that hits very hard, but that Hellcat is hyper-responsive to the slightest throttle input, they ought to put a tuneable dampner on the throttle to dial it down when Joe average drives it. I really enjoyed my test drive and was very impressed with the handling and the performance and the car was very comfortable. I am sure it would not take long to get used to the throttle, I did not have any problem, but most people with no real fast car experience, could get in trouble real quick, at least I was expecting it, but man! what a ride! I'd probably have to get a pacemaker if I drove a Demon!

They have 3 or 4 HP modes, valet (IIRC 300hp), then black key 500hp and red 707.

I think an eco mode is in there as well

How did you like the way it shifted? I hope you had the trans set in sport or track mode...

That throttle response is the same in my SRT, took awhile to get used to it. Way to touchy for my preference. Been looking at the 15s that are popping up, if I find a red or green one with the good leather seats at a decent price I'm trading.

I rode in one a while back
The guy who owned could really drive it.
I have to admit, it scared me a little. I know why you see wrecked ones.
As said you better know what you are doing because that car will get there before you do.

I have driven a few fast cars, but nothing like this.

I was considering buying one, but after that ride I changed my mind.

I bought a 17 6 speed SP.

I took my neighbor for a ride last year. He’s a car guy and specifically a Corvette owner. I gave it a little too much gas on a curve and slightly drifted through it! His C5 Vette is not slow but he is still talking about that ride in the Hellcat every chance he gets. shock

I passed at the chance to drive one last summer. I passed on driving a Viper the same day. Both cars belonged to separate brother in laws. My reflexes are not any where near what they used to be. I didn't want to take the chance of loosing it and having to figure out how to pay for a brother in law's car that I couldn't afford.

I know my limitations, and they are way below the performance of either a Viper or a Hellcat. Gene

Doesn't mean you have to rail on it! thumbs

I barely throttled a new ACR Viper for an hour or so and still had a blast.

With all the stability and traction controls, these cars are easy to handle if you have a little common sense.

I have a blast driving my wifes '16 SXT. I would probably get into trouble real quick in an R/T, much less a Hellcat. blush But I sure would love to ride in one though. boogie

A friend of mine owns this one, and he tossed me the keys. Wow. I've driven a lot of hot machines, road racing, dirt track racing and on the strip. A Hellcat demands your undivided attention if you plan on whacking the loud pedal.
Would love to own one.

The trans shifted instantly, it revs quickly, you better anticipate this car as everything happens quickly! Like one of the posters said, if your on the red key, you better be on your game and not playing with your cell phone. Truthfully, I was a little shocked at how good it ran, I have ridden in several R/T,s and felt that they were pretty doggy for 375 hp. I kinda figured that the Hellcat might be overrated like that, but hey, I was wrong! I am an old school musclecar kind of guy, I like being able to work on my own stuff, that said, I could see myself owning one of these, but I would have to take the emblem off, never warn them Vette owners!

The salesman at the local dealership let me test drive one with the red key. I thought he was going to wet himself when I tromped on it from a dead stop. I love getting on the go pedal of my 2014 daily driver SRT, but the Hellcat was amazing. I will probably never own one, but I can die a happy woman now that I have driven one. Oh, when we got back to the dealership he asked if I was ready to buy it. I replied, "I would, but I think someone has probably beaten the crap out of that one." Calls me every time he gets one in.

I know where you could find a 15 sublime with suede/leather with about 1300 miles on it. Been babied since day 1.

I got to drive a hellcat but it only had 37 miles on it so I didn't beat on it to hard. I asked to owner if I could lean on it a little and I did but I didn't let it RPM out or anything. I did do a kickdown on the highway and wow!

When I was in high school, a guy who had a 70 Chevelle SS 396 4 speed car, gave his keys to two guys in auto shop before school because they were supposed to work on the car that afternoon in auto shop class. Well they couldn't resist the urge to take the car for a ride to see if it had balls or not. After they blew the engine, the car came to the shop on the hook. The guy who owned the car was without the car for a month while the two clowns who blew it up found a low horsepower 396 2 bolt main 2 barrel engine to replace the one that they destroyed. The car was never the same and the guy sold it soon after getting it back. I heard the 2 douchebags saying what slow piece of crap it was, they weren't too remorseful for having damaged the guys car!

The suede type is not what I prefer (could change it out I guess), auto? but I'm interested.

that

I got on a '15 auto HC Challenger with the red key on some back roads and never felt like I was going to lose the car. Once you get familiar with it, its a very easy car to drive at speed.

But it easy to see that how, in untrained, irresponsible hands, it can become a dangerous weapon.

iagree It’s only doing about 1600 RPM’s at 80 mph. Nice standard comfort features. Very quiet and the seats are very comfortable. You can easily get 24-26 mph if you drive gently in cruise control. Kick it in to passing and it’s gone!

I have not driven a Hellcat but of course I drive my 10 second 63. But I have driven boosted cars and I know they come on hard so I bet its a different kind of feeling then a N/A car as my 63 is. I drove the turbo Stealth's when they came out which are no where near the car the Hellcat is but I know when that boost kicks up its a cool ride so I can bet the Hellcat hits hard when that boost gets going. I been saying this ever since we bought our (new) 15 cat. I'm old school also....and I hear all the time about how much better a old mopar is....and I say to my self....ya never driven a hellcat. Buy one or not I think every mopar gear head should drive a hellcat one time....many will rethink the hot rod thing.... I still have 3 cuda and a 71 charger. But fluff (what I named our hellcat) will mop the floor with them lol

Well my 63 is as fast as a stock Hellcat on stickies as they seem to run from 10.60's to 11.0's on stickies. So I would be about an ever race with a stock Hellcat but its a totally different feeling. From how my friends run which has hit 10.60's I would launch better and take it good out of the gate and get a lead but once that supercharger kicks in that Hellcat would be coming on strong and would be close to dead even at the finish but it would be pulling much harder at the finish line and going by my N/A eng. If the race was a 1/2 mile the Hellcat would win hands down because that supercharger would be shoving some serious air through that eng when my N/A eng is running out of breath. Its definetly a different kind of feeling!!!!!! Ron

I see that the tank is full. Nowhere near that average when the tank gets near empty. Fast cars use GAS! No if, ands or buts about it...Who buys a 707hp car and even thinks about mileage? Get over it, they are hogs and rightly so.

Ron, thats a belt driven supercharger and it is on when you hit the gas, no lag like a turbo. Thats what impressed me so much was the instantaneous throttle response. Turns out, the one I drove had long tube headers, bigger injectors and a smaller blower pulley for more boost. And 9 days after the guy bought it, he ran into the back of a truck at a light. mad

I never had a Mopar muscle car for economy and I have owned one or another every day since 1969. I always like to get as good a gas mileage as possible when I am on an open road. They are not hogs unless you are strictly doing city driving from light to light. It obviously depends on driving habits. I honestly average 25 mpg from point to point (sometimes less sometimes better) on a trip and 19 to 20+ Mpg for everyday combined city/highway and sometimes less. No matter whether it’s a short local trip or a longer trip, you do not drive one of these anywhere without some “spirited” driving...it will noticeably cut the tires lose if you kick it into passing gear at 40-50 mph! I have had multi-carbureted big block mild to wild A12 and 426 RoadRunners since 1972. The Hellcat is a horse of a different color and is an amazingly well engineered high performance vehicle. I appreciate it every time I get into it.

Well I don't have the Hellcat but do have the SRT 392, I know it's different when you hit the gas but all around driving, cruising, punching it, interstate and around town I get between 23 and 25 mpg. That's checked after each fillup against mileage driven, not that wish gauge. Nothing older can beat the overall package of these hipo Challengers. Heck I had an 07 Mustang GT 500 with the supercharger and got 24 mpg and I definitely didn't baby it, just fell out of love with the six speed. Real world IMO. If you have one of those cars you would know what we're talking about.
By the way, I love two lane crowded roads with passing zones, scares the heck out passengers and the drivers of the other cars, easily get upwards of 100 or more mph.

JD, yeah, it was a low speed bump that will cost some money to fix, it does not look bad, but closer inspection will tell the tale.

Haven't driven a Hellcat, yet. But I've driven several supercharged big blocks and the touchiness is no doubt the instant torque when you give a blown motor some AIR to compress. The bypass valve in modern blowers make them very docile to drive and I suppose there is software mods that limit the Transducer that controls the valve rate of opening and percentage open to help limit the power.

Modern challengers (I've driven a few SRT-8's) seem to me very heavy and the motor feels like 2/3'rds of it is directly under the long dashboard. Very different from driving an old B/E body.

I'd love to have a Hellcat motor in an early 63-66 A body post that was full-on tricked and set up for autocross with a 6 speed manual and rack & pinion steering. Imagine the same tire size footprint and brake combos in a roughly 1400 pound lighter car!!

Yes thats right as I was thinking more in the turbo mode. Thats making good power right at the hit. Glad to hear he is ok.. Ron
