What is the most I can mill a BB water pump housing? My elephant ears are 3/8" and I don't want to use a 3/8" crank pulley spacer because I don't have a lot of room to play with.

Can I take the whole 3/8" off the housing, or would I be safer taking 1/4" and using a 1/8" spacer on the crank?

Thanks guys!

Here's a picture of what I'm working with:

Put a electric pump on it, then you wont have to mill

or a electric water pump drive like the Moroso or Mr Gasket ones I milled my first water pump housing a 1/4 inch, which was the same thickness as my elephant ears

Thats another possibility Mike. The car will see a lot of street time though, so I'm not too sure I want to put all my trust into an electric pump. I was just curious what the max was for milling a pump housing.

There is tons of hot rods running electric water pumps
on the street, the CSR or Meziere style pumps with
electric fans on the rad

I am not sure what the max is but years ago we milled one down so everything would line up and I had continuous leaking problems. Found out that as it was milled down, the water pump holes became larger and didn't line up with the gaskets I was using on the waterpump to motor plate. Just something to keep in mind.

Milling more than 1/4" on my stock housing would have opened up one of the water port walls so it was to thin to seal. I then used a 1/4" motor plate with no problem. Using an electric pump will work on the street also. Call up a few manufacture's for their recommendations.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

My plate is 3/8", milled the alum mopar housing the same amount.
That made the gasket surface a little thin in a couple of spots. Used a spool gun to add a little metal and re-milled the high spots. All is good.
I also had to clearance the rear of the thermostat area of the housing and the plate a little.

I've made the suggestion a few times to the water pump mfgs that they make a race housing. It would come milled down already and it wouldn't be drilled for the heater hose fittings. So far nobody has bothered to introduce this as a product but I still think it is a good idea.

I'm thinking of getting the 440 source aluminum pump housing. Has anyone milled one of these 1/4" or 3/8" and not had problems with it sealing?

Does anyone know how much thinner the electric pumps are vs the mechanical ones?

Has anyone milled their 440source aluminum water pump housings? Is there enough meat to take 1/4" off and not have sealing issues?
