That's the same black capped 3 speed motor in both my 68 Barracuda and Dart. Seem them in most all others.

69-up had the yellow zinc one piece cans.

Are they Hamtramck or LA cars? shruggy

I even thought if I got it I might be able to power wash and wet sand the remnants of the custom paint off and save the original pain underneath as this car was definitely a LIGHT scuff and shoot. If this car would have had limited paint issues I would have owned it. I think

Didn't the actual selling price of the car at the auction earlier this year go somewhere in the mid $50's ?
I think 52k at the sale.

If you paid $52K for it would you? That's nearly double what you'd pay for same condition flaking paint low mile 340 4spd swinger

Maybe it's not washed cause fear of painted coming off?

Its mine and yes I paid about 53K for it and also stuck a bit into it to get it running and driving properly. Those are the original rims that came with the car when it was given away (They were in the trunk along with some of the other speed parts). The paint is starting to have issue's as one person noted but it is 50 years old and George Barris (Batmobile fame) is no longer with us to re-paint so to me it should stay the way it is. I did not wash it yet because Bob Ashton requested the car to be shown in the barn find section of the MCACN unwashed. It will be cleaned up as soon as I get it home to Florida after the show if it doesn't sell. I know some people may think that I am asking crazy money for it but find me another one with the history this car has. I know I filled out the form when I was a kid to try and win it! The 16 year old who originally won the car only lives a few minutes away from me and we spoke at great length on the car and he gave me a scrap book supplied to him from Car Craft magazine with Wally Parks, Keith Black, Lynda Vaughn amongst many other Hot Rod Hall of Fame members at the giveaway in Dallas at the Winter Nationals. I have a copy of each title from every owner, each owners contact info (Except the previous one who passed away) numerous magazine articles, Car Craft wants to do a feature on it now, a die cast company has contacted me on making a die cast of it. So now you know why it wasn't washed, (George Barris painted it), now you know why the engine wasn't messed with (Keith Black built it), now you know why the chassis was kept the way it was (Charlie Allen set it up) Wild Bill Shrewsberry (LA Dart) raced the car for Car Craft, it was a World Record holder in the 72-73 timeframe. As Galen Govier stated "This is the Holy Grail of Darts" so it is what it is? I think it should be in a museum for all to see, I had to come up with a asking price but I am open to offers, but I feel its rich history makes it worth every penny... who knows maybe I will simply keep it. (Interesting trades considered too)

I sat next to it all weekend at MCACN, the paint is in terrible shape. Whoever stored it for the last 40 years is an idiot. tsk

I think you should give it back to the 16 yr old who won it originally! It is cool that you talked to him and he gave you the scrapbook of info. (tongue in cheek of course.....and wash carefully please).

The housewife was his mom. She had to take delivery due to legal reasons. Dad was overseas serving IIRC the write up at MCACN correctly.

I saw them moving it into the Barn Find area, the dang thing sounds WICKED! Seriously, if you were blind folded you'd think they were driving in an injected Hemi AWB car! HUGE cam lope through open fender well headers.

It's amazing that car survived. I remember the giveaway, and for a 16-year-old to have basically left the car alone is miraculous.
FWIW, the Hamburger decal dates from '74; previously the company was "340s Only", for obvious reasons.

The 16 year old was not old enough to take the car so his mother was awarded the car. (But he in fact won the car)

I would assume the stickers fell off? The big one's stated CRAGAR on the fenders originally as well as KEITH BLACK RACING. It was simply a race car back then? No one knew what would become of the price of these cars. If I could figure out a way to add a pic I would.

As for the paint job, it is a shame it wasn't taken better care of but if you were the person next to me in the 70 Road Runner about the only thing left on your car that could be used in a restoration was the vin? I am not knocking it as it was an amazing car to see and I hope it gets restored but my point was no one knew what was going to happen to these cars back then? To me it is amazing that George Barris lacquer paint job is still on this car at all!?

I was the guy with the 69 Savage GT next to the roached pinkie thing, and brought the 72 Demon GSS. I have lusted after your Dart since it was made and tried to win it back in the day. I called in for the Iowa auction but it went quickly over my max bid. frown
