No worries. I am strictly a helper helping my wife, she could run this business by herself if i croaked.
Nothing saying she has to pay me.... i volunteer to help.
She pays an employee she has. I get favors at home for my efforts. Lol

I use mine to pay medicare supplement, drugs insurance, SRT payment and the Scag payment. Check direct deposits into a debit account and after the payments I use it for meals, golf and gas. Still have some left over each month. The money I make in my business stays in the business to pay all the taxes. Play money pays for my cars.

Educate me please, how do SS payments go down if you delay taking it... even if your income average goes down?

I’ve been retired since 2008 (age 55, but wife is still a self employed beautician).

All my SS projections (and those sent by SS annually) show a roughly $100 per month increase for each year I delay.

I understand folks taking SS early, and those that delay. It’s a personal decision based on many factors.

Maybe I misread or misinterpreted your post?

I don’t see how postponing SS can decrease payment? shruggy

Started getting mine this last april at 62...

My only question is why don't you have them directly deposit them to your checking acct??? I wake up on the third Wednesday and check my acct online... AHHHH Pennies from heavin.....

To all of you who wait longer, their is NO guarantee that YOU will be here... One thing my father in law told me when I was in my twenties.. " Take that money when you can as its YOUR MONEY, and there is no guarantee how long you will live"

Of course if you do die, your EX wife can get em...... LOL

One thing for sure.... there is NO formula to determine which choice is right: take early, or defer.

Now, if you can answer that pesky question “when will I die?”

The answer becomes more clear... coffee

Before the changes were made when we would get 80% at 62 and 100% at 65 I was told by a financial planner that it took 17 years to get the money back that you lost by waiting. I will take my 70% at 62 and roll the dice

Bingo! It's the old carrot in front of the donkey trick...the gov hopes you'll wait until full retirement age then they hope you won't last long...they try to lure you into gambling with YOUR money...my old company tried the same thing with my pension...haha...fooled 'em took it soon as I could, gonna do the same with SS. Waiting vs. taking as early as possible...an EXCEL spreadsheet with the monies spread out over the upcoming years tells the story, look for the age where the lines intersect and look how old you may be when that intersection occurs...just like your financial planner said, it takes YEARS to get back the money you lose by not taking it early, granted...if you think you're going to live to 80-100...then wait...by then they'll just use it to pay your rest home bill...just sayin... beer

Educate me please... why then is 67-1/2 mentioned as full retirement and full benefit age? Would there be any substantial difference in SS benefits between retirement at 65 and 67-1/2?

You must be young... Full retirement used to be 65, but it was changed... full for me was 66 3 months... AFTER I was told for YEARS that it would be 65....

Try to be a private institution and do that....

Go ahead and wait, the government needs YOUR money for lots of "others" that didn't pay any SS......

LOL! Nah, I'm not young... just obviously haven't been paying close enough attention. Try and be a private institution and do that? Hmmmm, well when I interviewed (twice!) for my current job 12 years ago I had two different representatives of the company tell me, "and if you stay here 10 years you become a shareholder!" I thought that sounded GREAT, so I made my mind up right then I was in for 10 years at least! Then when I was over 8 years in the company made an announcement, "Um, you know that 10-year shareholder thing? Um, the way we're structured we can only have 100 shareholders, so sorry... no more shareholders allowed!" Now, they did hand those of us in that situation a check for $10k at ten years in order to attempt to minimize the damage. The checks were actually made for more than that, so that by the time your taxes came out they were actually handing you 10 grand. But still, over the course of the career I'm going to have here the share of stock would have made me more than $10 grand in value and dividends...

So is this how US SS works?

From: http://money.cnn.com/retirement/guide/SocialSecurity_basics.moneymag/index3.htm?iid=EL

Quote:
You accumulate credits based on your earnings. In 2016, you get one credit for every $1,260 you earn (that figure is adjusted higher each year), up to a limit of four credits per year. These credits remain on your record even if you change jobs or stop working for a while.

If you were born after 1929, you need 40 credits in order to receive Social Security retirement benefits.

So does that mean to collect the same SS as everybody else that you only have to earn $5040 per year for 10 years before retirement age? Or do you collect more SS if, for example, you worked for 30 years at $50,000/year?

A person with fewer than 35 years of earnings could increase his or her retirement benefits by working a few extra years, replacing any “zero” years in the benefit calculation.

I took mine at 65 instead of 66, same as Medicare. My intersecting line was age 79 and change to where I would lose money, pennys not dollars. How many people did you know who never made it to SS? Who gets all the money they paid in? Remember, if still working, you can only make so much before giving part of it back. Each year the limit goes up though, I think now I can make whatever and no penalty. Also they base your allotment on the last ten years of working. Make as much as you can those last few years.

Whoa!

I better sign up! NOW! or better yet, yesterday.

My time ran out August 22, 2005!

And even yet, a little over 12 years later, I am still BMI of 35 ... and still working to try to get to age 70, but the way things are going at work a few months from now at 69 is looking better and better.

And I think my SS $ would only take about a $50 hit.

I poorly planned most of my life, wasted most of my money on cars, fun, and one wife, thinking, I guess, that I wouldn't last this long ... so the extra $400 a month by hanging on until 70 seemed important.

Lately though, that last year/$50 doesn't seem so important.

Dad died at 77.
Mom at 89
paternal granddad at 100
Maternal granddad at 70?
paternal grandma at 80+ ... 10 kids
maternal grandma somewhere in her 60s? ...6 kids

Not sure if that leads anywhere ...

Break even for me if I take it at 62 is 78. My dilemma is my Mom will be 97 and Dad passed just before he turned 95.

So there is a hugh difference if I live to their age. Also the problem you can get into taking it early is it can be possibly taxed and if you’re going to try and save it in a bank account you get next to no interest but if you wait you get 8% more each year you wait up to 70.

So like has been said if you know when you’re going to die it would be easy.

Well, for those who plan on living past the year 2035 its easy, take the money early and invest it. The soc security administration says by that year they will reduce benefits, it is right on their websites big as day. Believe them.

So like has been said if you know when you’re going to die it would be easy.

You are taxed on your SS if combined income ( SS and another income) are over 25K or if just your SS is over 25K a year..
So if you are working at 62 and taking your SS then YES you will probably be taxed on your SS....

Anyone know if the EX wife story is true??

I have "been told" if you have any or multiple EX wifes, EVEN if you are married when you die, the first one that calls in gets your SS????

Seemed as if when I signed up for my SS ( you do it 3 months before the age you want to draw it) they asked more questions about my EX than me..

I know that if you are married and both of you draw SS then when one dies the larger amount is the one you end up with. My MIL who is 90 has been collecting her husbands SS for decades and he died in a car accident in 1963! shock

I'd love to know if this is true too. I have an ex that I'd prefer not get a cent since I've been paying her fat useless azz alimony for years. Would MUCH prefer my current wife get the $$$. She's gonna need it far worse than the spoiled rich be-yatch I married the first time...

Retirement age depends on birth year.

Benefit earned is calculated with algorithms.
Basically it takes all years you payed in, adjust to todays current value, takes top 35 years total, averages that, the benefit is based on that amount.

Thanks for the explanation! up I finally got signed in and looked at my career earnings and benefits, etc. It told me my retirement date of 66-1/2 not 67-1/2. Not a big difference, but as tired as I am of working where I am, every little bit is going to help. I'm now officially counting the years until I turn 66-1/2. It'll be here way sooner than I'd like to admit. But longer than I'd like to be at the place I'm at...

https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/ssb/v70n3/v70n3p111.html

Sample quote

As a result of changes to Social Security enacted in 1983, benefits are now expected to be payable in full on a timely basis until 2037, when the trust fund reserves are projected to become exhausted.1

At the point where the reserves are used up, continuing taxes are expected to be enough to pay 76 percent of scheduled benefits. Thus, the Congress will need to make changes to the scheduled benefits and revenue sources for the program in the future.

The Social Security Board of Trustees project that changes equivalent to an immediate reduction in benefits of about 13 percent, or an immediate increase in the combined payroll tax rate from 12.4 percent to 14.4 percent, or some combination of these changes, would be sufficient to allow full payment of the scheduled benefits for the next 75 years.

The program now provides benefits to over 50 million people and is financed with the payroll taxes from over 150 million workers and their employers. Further modifications of the program are a certainty as the Congress continues to evolve and shape this program, reflecting the desires of each new generation.

End quote

Notice that 150 million
are "pay as you go" supporting
50 million.

With the "Baby Boomers" retiring in a bulge now,
and the USA under age 65 "worker participation rate" percentage dropping,
soon 160 million will be supporting 80 million.

The 80 million retired could grow to some unknown larger number if a medical breakthrough drug like the potential one described below is found to work.

LOL! Not quite the same situation in my case... let's just say divorce law in NC isn't kind to men... I've had to pay her too much for WAY too long! Fact is, she's a millionaire's kid and she is now sole heir to his fortune. She doesn't NEED my Social Security $$$, but I would bet because she's greedy that she'll tap it anyway. Maybe just out of spite.

I’ve got one of those “out there somewhere” too.

Married to her from 1978 to 1983.

Married to current wife since 1985! WINNER! boogie

My ex? Dunno . Last I heard she ways on her fourth marriage, and lost custody of at least one kid. And THAT was over 20 plus years ago.

Had a full police background check done in 2002, and even they couldn’t find her.

I thank God daily that I never fathered anything with that dingbat! bow

My ex already got half of my house, half of my 401K, and luckily I bought MY pension out. That saint deserves my Social Security too. I'd rather see her get it than some low life system worker that NEVER worked a day in his or her life. The abuse that is going on there is killing Social Security.

I was looking for a "bowing" emoticon but could not fine one..

You are my hero...... LOL

Equal rights correct? that's how it should be and what women have fought for a long time...

I remember Joan Lunden years ago divorcing her husband/agent who had spent his life promoting her career.. Judge awarded him big bucks on alimony.. I remember her squealing like a stuck pig.. "That's MY money" she was spewing... LOL

Be careful what you wish for....

Quite a system isn't it... Should be illegal... And men actually remarry????????????????

main reason is to keep women off the welfare rolls and all of the other "entitlement" freebies that will bankrupt and end this country eventually.....

They weren't all bad and I share some of the blame too. laugh2

But, I actually like being married. I have dogs, but it's nice having a woman around too. Just not a crazy one. laugh2

Anyone know how to calculate how much money you need to make between 62 and say, 67 (when I get to retire)?

E.g. say I retire at 62, I get 1700/mo.

If I retire at 67, I get $2200/mo.

Do I need to still make my current wage (let's say, $75k/year) between 62 and 67 to get the max? Or can I get by with say, part time and make $38k/year and still get my max at 67?

Went through the calculations for me a couple years back, if I went at 62 vs 65, came out that it would take 12 years (until I was 74+) to collect the SSec I'd miss out on by not going early - my break even point if you will. At the time I had big doubts I'd live to 74, much less be able to actively participate in spending my income at that point. Checked out of the work force at 62 and haven't looked back.

BTW, if I was foolish enough to want to work I can still earn up to around 13k annually without reducing my SSI.

Social Security calculates your average indexed monthly earnings during the 35 years in which you earned the most.

Generally yes. Look at the ss calc you get on line and it tells you what the future income assumption is for their projections.
