I think I've located a nice Cuda and ready to pull the trigger with an offer. It's at a dealer in Charlotte NC called Streetside Classics. The 71 Cuda is purple with billboards. They have really good pics and video but I would like an honest opinion about the car, especially for 62 grand. If anybody could help I would be happy to pay for your time. Text me if you can help. 573-four two nine-4056 Thanks, Ed

They also have a blue 71 Cuda I would consider but from pics I think the purple car is better.

Yes, you must REALLY have a good look at anything coming out of Streetside. ChrisH can probably go over there, he is retired now... biggrin Better yet, have OrangeCrush head over! boogie

I may be totally out of touch, but for those prices I'd sure want the undersides of those cars to look better than they do! Comparing the underside photos to the other photos of the car screams perfumed pig to me...

For that coin, you may consider hiring someone to fly down and look at them on your behalf. I had an acquaintance hire me to look at a 69.5 super bee that just needed to be put together. He knew I was into mopars and knew a lot about the lift off hood cars. He paid for my airfare ($500 and my time, another $500). I wrote a report and took hundreds of pictures. Turns out the car was a rebody. I saved him a ton of money and heart ache even though he was out $1000.

Well, I see a bunch of things that would drive me nuts if I were paying $60k plus on the purple car. First, and my biggest pet peeve, is that the car was not disassembled when the engine bay was painted. The upper control arm hardware and inspection covers are purple. Looks like the brake line too, but hard to tell. Right rear frame rail where the rear seat floor pan sits looks like there is some expanded foam or something oozing out of the seam. I don't think the factory used seam sealer there. Steering wheel is obviously cracked. Hardware for door mechanism is painted so that wasn't taken apart either. All leads me to suspect the quality of restoration. Pretty car though. Just my two cents.

Its not the 340 car with the wrong vin rivits is it?

Before anyone replied I seen that joints name, considering the underside, the untouched steering wheel that car looks like a rough car with decent paint.

I hope it works out but id look for a private seller vs a place, that place.

I found it entertaining that the blue cuda has a blue engine which should be orange, and the purple cuda has an orange engine which should be blue! devil

Thanks folks. That's why I asked for more eyes. You caught things I missed. Keep picking it might save me a trip. It not easy to find a 71 Cuda for sale for a decent price. I find projects or perfumed pigs, no happy medium.

and you don't realize what you don't have until you start reassembling it.. I'm also considering a car in Ohio that has all the chassis and bodywork done but it's apart and missing parts but about the same money. Six of one half a dozen of the other. I have the wrecked hellcat already, and the funds are ready for the right car. Orange crush is going to look at the car in NC tomorrow.

The purple Cuda fits what we are looking for as long as it's not perfumed too bad. The underside is a non issue for me. I will be removing all the suspension for the conversion, adding subframe connectors, new Kframe with rack and pinion steering, new exhaust and fuel tank and independent rear suspension. I will clean the floors up then. Engine and trans will be removed and the few detail items in the engine bay will be addressed then. We are going to use Hellcat seats and try to use the Hellcat gauges and steering column modified to fit the Cuda dash. They are asking 62 for the car but will offer much less and see where it goes. I'll wait to hear from Orange Crush later today and if the car isn't nice, then I'll keep looking.

I'm taking tomorrow off so that I can go take a good hard look at both cars. The guy at the dealership seems to be pretty open about condition and was very open to me coming up to crawl all over the car, so I count that as a positive.

It's also a REAL 340 '71 Inviolet 'Cuda...so that definitely makes a difference in the value...but yeah...nice shiny paint on a car that people pay lots of money for is bound to make you nervous!

Based on what the OP is going to do to the car, does any of this matter???

Depends...

It'n not the individual buyer's needs that dictate the asking price in the classic car market. It's the attributes of the car being sold. In a sea of clones, an original is always going to fetch more money.

Hard to find a '71 'cuda in good shape anymore that doesn't cost 40 grand or more. Hell...clones are well into the 40s nowadays.

Correct, I understand that part. What I don't understand is the need of a matching # car based on what the OP is going to do to it..

There is no need for numbers matching and that isn't even a consideration. I think that is was noted for informational purposes.

This is just my opinion. But at anything close to 62K I have to ask ,,,Why ?

For the OPs intended purpose maybe look for a clean cuda body of any year and build your own

Even if you spent say $20K on a clean body. add the gilled fenders and tail light panel from AMD and away you go.

Again just curious. But then again, I am about doing what YOU want with YOUR money . Just seems like a bad idea. Again IMO only

First off, the OP can do what he wants, that's cool.
But I could not agree more with the above.

I would find a decent body and go from there, I think you could do better $ wise since those Mods are going to change the car so much.

Those cars have been for sale for a while.
71 Cuda's are very sought after.
I think both those cars are over priced by around 10K even if they check out.

I very recently sold a 71 340 4 Speed FJ6 Cuda. It was a very nice original car with tons of original paperwork.
That car went in the mid 60's.

However it turns out, good luck with your pursuit.

Well, say he used a 72 barracuda, would people on here would be slamming it saying it was not a real 71?

Probably, myself, I prefer the 72-74 Cuda. I looked at a 70 Gran Coupe in St Louis that was nice and quite possibly a survivor for 29 grand. The boss didn't want it because it had a vinyl top. He doesn't want to do a restoration or fix someone else's poor bodywork. He would prefer a car without an engine or trans but after looking for two months and finding nothing acceptable, he has opted to spend more money for the pop and pizzaz that a 71 billboard Cuda has. That's what he likes and I have been tasked with helping to accomplish the transformation. He will not sell the car once it is done. It will go into the climate controlled shop with his other toys and be driven to shows and events as he sees fit.

Thank you Orange Crush for taking time out of your day to stop and look at this car. The little things you see in person over photos can make or break a deal. From what you told me I can feel comfortable with our decision. I would be happy to return the favor in the future. Thank you again, Ed

My pleasure.

Just my 2 cents. I did a whole lot of price research on 71 'Cudas before going to look at these cars. I looked all over the internet.

It is almost impossible to find a 71 'Cuda selling for less that 50 grand. Heck, 72-74 'Cudas are getting there quickly. I've personally witnessed a nuts and bolts restored show-quality '71 Cuda 340 selling for six digits...so it's not like the asking price in these two cases is that far out of line.
