so i went to the track today this is what happened. had a pair of used hoosiers on my 383 coronet. after playin with jets 5 times i arrived 79 in the front and 83 in the back. with 14 lbs in the slicks i ran my best time. 13.3 @100 mph my 60' was 1.9 this was my best run (was actually expecting more but what are you gonna do) i had 9 runs and got better with every pass. with the 3.55 gears i was shifting into 3rd as i went through the traps. i am going to change out to 4.10. my question is how much improvment will i see with gear swap? will this help with my 60'?

IMHO, not very much, if any, if you have a good converter......100MPH is enough to go 12.90's, with a looser converter, the tires not spinning, even with 3.55's........been there, done that in quite a few different cars......

I don't know, my street car went 13.9/3.23 13.6/3.91 13.1@105/4.56. That was with a 26" tire too. 383 with a xe284 cam. When I ran 3.23s I was going thru the traps at 6500 in second. I think you need gears, especially if its heavy cammed. The only way to drop your 60' is a big (5000) convertor.

Everything else staying the same (including weather conditions) and only changing the gear, maybe a 0.10 in the 60'. If you get the 60' improvement you'll get 0.15 to 0.2 overall.
Getting a street car like yours to 60' better than 1.9 is difficult at your power level.

Let us know what you find out

with the squeeze, 3500 is not a good race converter. not anywhere close.

Yes the 4.10's will definitely help your 60 especially with the 383 trying to get that thing rolling. I would go to 4.30's if you are buying new gears, they are a nice compromise between 4.1 and 4.56.
I went from 3.23's in my 69 roadrunner with a 440 running 12.5's most of the time to 4.30's and 1st pass it ran 12.15 and I only made 3 passes and I got it down to 12.09.
That was a street car, 10:1 pump gas 440 with a .509 cam, 3500 stall, 3700# car with me in it.

You guys that are picking up by going to a lower gear have a relatively tight converter.....anything under 4K I consider tight........I guarantee that you can put a 9.5" converter that will got to 4,500 to 4,800 in that car and it'll go high 12's with 3.55's, if it's not spinning......and those converters are extremely "streetable".......

I have a PTC 3,500 converter and get 1.81 sixty foot times on my worn out M/T drag radials at around the same power level as you. I just got a set of fresh drag radials and want to see if I can dip into the 1.7's this spring.

Mine runs 12.91 @ 103 with 3.91 gears and S/S springs. I've wittled my 60 down with launch technique (lots of practice).

I learned the converter thing with a friends car. His car made me nervous as it ran real good with a 3.23 gear and a loose converter. I was thinking his swap to 3.91s would make him faster as it picked my car up 7 tenths(stock converter). Well he got his 3.91s and it ran the same times thanks to his good converter lol.

Good example. I could not have set this up any better.

So, if you had a 100 mph trap like the OP, that would put you at about 13.2 - plus or minus a little.

how would 4.30's act on the street? it's mostly a street car but i would like to be able to say it's a 12 sec car. would it be a better investment to put a looser converter in a street car or just go to 4.10s or 4.30s?

if it were me I would probably go with 410s and a good converter. we ran 456s and 488s on the street but no highway runs

Before you pick a gear what rpm are you shifting at?
My limit for street is a 4.10 with the 28" tire I usually run.Highway trips are not happening.

A 383 is no more than a small block in the larger big
block housing... you need all the torque you can get.
The stall in the converter lets you get into the torque
range quicker, the gear is the multiplier for the torque

4.30's on the street with street tires would be a blast......for a while. That's a lot of gear for a short tire and you will be zinging the tach constantly and maintaining highway speeds will be brutal. It will get real old, real fast.

A loose converter would be a better "investment". I know several guys with loose converters in the 5000 rpm range and their cars are very streetable. Not to say the gears you have are optimum, but if you're only going to change one thing, I'd go with the converter before the gears.

I also suggest contacting PTC converters, that's what I run and am very happy with the performance, price, and especially the service.

I agree with that, but I'm not a big fan a 383 street car with two gears...
