My tow rig is a 2012 5.7 hemi .. 80,000 some miles well it's starting to make some noise and it sounds like valve train but could be worse. So the plan is to get a block and build a 392 but keep it reliable for towing ... what would you guys do. I'm going to use my top end but with refreshed heads I think 6.1 cam new lifers etc ... what else would you do or change ???? Help me out this will be my first new gen hemi .. thanks guys

John

6.1 cam will not work in a 2009-up Hemi.

80,000 miles, is it just a tick on start up? 5.7 Rams were bad about breaking exhaust manifold bolts.

No I thought the same it was on the passenger side and then went to the drivers side but sounds like it's in the valve Train ? It gets louder and then goes away under acceleration comes back under idle and light throttle .. it almost sounds like a broken spring in a way or a rocker is messed up...

I would buy a 6.4 short block cam and all and stuff it under you heads. The OE 392 short block is about the same prce as a rotating assy to stroke a 5.7 and all the machine work and assembly is already done.

I have seen broken valve springs on the eagle 5.7 and a bunch of flat cams.

My vote is to find that noise now... my guess is a bad lifter that's allowing metal debris to run thru the oiling system.

If your going to get a block(6.4, Hellcat) go 426, 4.05 stroke with the 4.09 bore, and don't look back. As for cam inertiamotorsports.com tell these guys what your looking to do and they'll help you with a good tow haul cam.

I have 426CI 6.4 with Eagle heads in my 2014 ram right now, , pulls like a V-10 , gobs of low end break stuff type pull.
I had 392 with eagles and a SRT 392 Auto cam in it, ran great but no bottom end, the cam didn't like that off idle pull, even with the stock Eagle intake.

So the 6.4 with a SRT 6.4 cam didn't have TQ but the 5.7 you swapped on into did? If towing was my only goal I would probably use the eagle cam and heads on the 6.4 short block. My 2011 5.7 tows my open car trailer with a mid size car on it pretty awesome, I pass 12 valve cummins trucks with similar loads on the big mountains around here pretty regular. It does need to turn more RPM but so what, it don't seem to hurt anything and turns in 13mpg while towing on a regular basis.

I would think that smaller ports and a milder cam would be the hot ticket for towing... I'd get a cam recomendation from Mike Jones at www.jonescams.com. He will sell you a new cam or regrind your stocker... smart guy.

5.7 ? the only 5.7 that was in the truck was the stocker, I put a SRT 392 cam in it(the stock 5.7) back in March, , lost some low grunt, not notable unloaded, but with the trailer and my Niece's 2010 challenger , you could tell the difference. That 5.7 has been out of the truck since late May early June

What I was talking about in my org post was stock SRT392 auto (6.4 Short block) vs 426CI Hellcat block, both had the same set of Eagle Heads on them,, but different cams.
I have the stock 5.7 cam in the 426 right now.
Very little tuning has been done, and this truck still has the stock manifolds and exhaust.

I've run a few Jones cam's over the years, great RACE cams.
