2 piece, getting ready to install in a small block, I understand cleanliness is key, I understand to cock the SOB so that one end is sticking up out of the block a bit and and the other end is sticking out of the cap a bit.

Im pretty sure that I apply oil to the seal and hope it stays there as best as possible since Im not pulling the crank in this situation.

I believe Im clear on putting a very thin sealer .....would that be ultra black or just plain ole silicone? ......on the cap/block mating surface.

What Im completely unsure about is do I put any sort of sealer on each tip of the seals so that when they go together it hels seal them and if so what kind?

You can put just a light & I mean light (a mini drop) touch of silicone or ultra black or permatex on the two mating "tips". On the offset. 1/4" clocking is plenty.

Thank-you, One thing I dont get is why only 1/4, why not split it in half so there is zero chance?

good point. You'd sure think you could go halfway as it is a simple circular situation, it was just one time I offset ~1" iirc & it leaked & I had to do it over (& went flush) but this was back in the dark ages & I for sure mighta done something improper. YMMV!

I've never cocked a main seal in over thirty years of building Mopar V8 BB or SB shruggy Most rear main seal leaks are in the side seals or at the mating surfaces of the oil pan gasket on the rear main cap on the SB scope
Do NOT put any silicone between the main cap and block tsk That will add clearance between them allowing oil pressure to push it out work
I do apply a tiny thin retaining layer of silicone sealer to the back side of the main seals, both on the top and bottom up

I always do it the way Cab does as well. Only problems I have ever had have been the side retainers on big blocks.

I bough the conversion kit for my 440 so when I put that together Im hoping it will be a breeze.

Thanks guys, 289 all together now for the internal part and I did put a super tiny bit between the cap and the block, did cock the seal just a tad but did not put any sealer on the tips of the seal itself, Im thinking Im gonna be OK
