I've used a bunch of BB stroker cranks from Ohio Crankshafts with no bad results up They are made and processed, all machine work and heat treating, done here in the U.S. in Ohio work
Eagle and Scat not so is what I've been told on here many times shruggy
I've also used some cheaper Chinese imports, Scat cast steel SB stroker and several BB RPM brand stroker cranks in several motors with no problems either confused work

4" forged crank

I think you will find they are all pretty decent, ive had more jacked ootb higher cost cranks then lower cost over the years.

K1 being the worst offender, 3 for 3.

The only issue I had with my K1 crank was it was a little tight for my convertor huh. A few minutes with a flapper wheel fixed this issue. That engine went 9.60's in my duster and I will be building a better engine with another K1 crank I have sitting here over the Winter

I have an Ohio 4" in the 408. 250 passes so far and no issues. I'd buy another one.

I'm not sure those Ohio cranks are US made... anyone know for certain? My engine guy has had issues with them and told me not to bring them to his shop... he sez the quality control has been inconsistant.

I have a 3.79 Mopar Performance crank in my SB 383... comes from 1993 and it appears to be US made. Just got it back from the crank shop... had one journal repaired after it smoked two rods after being run with heavy oil and no warm up. The PO told me he paid $1800.00 for it back in the day...

I question them on where the forging came from back in the early 2000s when they first started advertising in the National Dragster, they insisted that all their forging came from Ohio Forge shruggy scope
As far as quality control I've never had a issue with any of the ones (12) I bought and used shruggy
One of them is in my current bracket motor hammer up

Does Ohio Forge own a factory in China? The answer they gave you could be technically correct and the forging still be from off shore.

I don't believe there is a company that is called Ohio Forge. I just did a literature search on all the forging companies in Ohio and not one of them looked like they forged automobile crankshafts. There is a brand of cheap Chinese power tools named Ohio Forge, but no relation.

When this topic came up a few years ago someone said he had received his Ohio Crank crankshaft in a box that said Newland. If you look that up you will find that the Newland Group is a Chinese company supplying higher performance parts to the American market.

I'm not complaining, because 90% of the advances in hot parts here in the US have been forced along by the sudden availability of stroker cranks and high quality connecting rods in such a variety that it's almost unheard of any more to not build a stroker. Bigger engines need better heads, better intake systems, more variety and better pistons, etc.

Ohio Crank is making money and employing American workers. Maybe they're just checking tolerances, maybe they're doing finish machine, I will never know. I'm just happy that we have much better options when building engines.

R.

Tom Molnar was part of the K1 startup, I believe he was designer at another high end hard part company before K1. Says on the website that he has more than 35 years doing cranks and rods.

Molnar left K1 to run his own business.
K1 was bought by Wiseco. Now they can sell you a complete rotating assembly.

It's easy to have your own crank and rod or cylinder head company nowadays. Just check out all the suppliers at alibaba.com I believe it's safe to say that any $800 or less crank, and any $600 and less set of rods, came out of China. You may or may not do finish machining or dimensional checking in the States. They'll laser etch or stamp or whatever your name on the rod and voila! You are a connecting rod company.

I'm not throwing mud at Tom Molnar. The Chinese designs are rather generic. I believe that Tom will add his input to get closer to what he wants. Plus his personal involvement in the company means the customer is at least two or three steps closer to top management.

Lots of choices. I've had good luck with SCAT, Molnar and K1. Sometimes it just depends on price and availability. If you are using JE pistons then you can buy a package deal from K1. If you order from Summit you can get free shipping so that saves you money. I'm set up as WD with Molnar so that saves money too.

Molnar would be my choice over anything but a Winberg or Bryant and those are hard for most of us to afford new.

Excellent customer service and good advice.

Ive posted before my most trouble free crank has been a simple eagle forged 4 inch crank, its in my sprayed street racer that runs 6.0s at the track.

The K1-s I had trouble with, one had a main way off and two others had mains so far each way I had to go .010 on them, however with K1 being a good product I got both of the worst K1-s from the same place, same time, that I didnt know was closing shop soon after my purchase and both cranks were dated, so maybe I got there off the shelf not so great ones or maybe even returns.

Just like anything, good machine work and proper assembly goes way further then the brand on most of our junk.
