2006 Dodge 3500 turbo making a lot of noise when I moderately push pedal ( whining up noise) let off or just cruise no noise. Had truck since new only started this after I put new ac on. I changed out water pump sat and took the turbo pipes off to see if there's a hole in the rubber connectors, none. Maybe a bearing? There's an electrical sender on the bottom of turbo housing, I'm guessing that's a waste gate controller, could that be a problem?

What exactly does a new ac mean?

what type of intake charge pressures are you seeing (boost PSI)?

Don't know no gauge but good response and power.

Pull the intake hose off and give the shaft a wiggle, that will tell you if the bearings are going on it. If it has excessive play, you will need to rebuild it, its a pretty easy and you can a Holset rebuild kit from NAPA for about $80 bucks.

I saved a guy quite a bit of coin by NOT following the above advise. He actually brought me a turbo to install and told the writer he needed it. As I was beginning to take things apart I'd grabbed the front shaft and gave it a wiggle. Nothing out of the ordinary so I stopped there and called him.... that was why he was replacing it. Thought the "loose" shaft was a sign of it failing. There is "good" loose, and obviously "bad" loose on the shaft of these things.

Sometimes a "whine" or "squeal" noise can be boost escaping under load. Easy to give all the boot clamps a little snug on the air charge system. You can even make a tool to fit the front of the turbo and air psi test it yourself (we have a nice tool at the dealer to do this). Of course it's hard to diag not being "one on one" with the truck, but I've also heard more turbo noise when there is an open element or even K&N style filter in place.

fwiw I can probably count on one hand the amount of turbos that I've replaced for "noise" in the 20 years of doing this.

Mine has no play at all but with the hoses off it still whines. What about the waste gate and that other electrical sencer, could they be causing the noise or making the turbo work too hard? For 100,000 miles it never made this noise until I removed the pipe to get yo the ac compressor. My first thought was I had broken or got a hole in the pipe rubbers. What about the filter (too much restriction?)

Almost ashamed to tell this but... I thought the clamps were tight, I had tightened them down with my air wrench with the wrong socket. It ran them down to the spring but then slipped and would only go so tight and didn't realize that. I noticed it this morning when feeling the hose again so using the right 7/16 socket I tightened with a ratchet and bottomed out the spring, now no noise after test drive. Live and learn I guess.
Thanks for the answers, at least they steered me in the right direction.

Anyone that occasionally turns a wrench and says they never missed anything is a liar. Glad you got it figured out!
