well i lost a pushrod from a failed retainer in the lifer.
shown here

Pushrod link

i went ahead and upgraded the rockers and rods
fired it up and quickly came a metal grinding noise.
like spur gears eating themselves, or metal in a pump.
so i shut it down. once cooled i decided to rock the crank back and forth.
this was its result.

ur honest guess. i haven't opened it up yet because its end of season. no money no funny.
and i don't like to leave blocks open for long periods with no pan/oil at least canadian winters are dry.

if its spun bearing, think i can get away without work on the crank?
if its end cap/stretched bolt yay?

i dont think its above the bearings as theres no knock or tick while running.
ie wrist pin or bent connecting rod. but sounds like valve train chatter from too advanced timing..

here is a vid of the top end put back together. you cant really hear it.

my guess the bent pushrod was from float/kissing or the pushup.
psi on oil never goes past 60 but i am running royal purple 20w60
no zinc or additives, about 700 miles on the build.

i guess whom ever guesses what it is and i do actually open it gets bragging rights?

If it were me I'd drop the pan. Only way to see what really is going on in there.

sounds too tinny to be a bearing, more like, windage tray? crank scraper?, flex plate cracked or loose crank or converter bolts.

Light travels faster than the speed of sound,,,this is why some people seem bright untill you hear them speak.

If it has a crank scraper on the pan that's my bet...
It's a very hollow sound...I don't think it's anything crank to rod related... maybe something heavy hitting something thin???

Could be a loose rod hitting the windage tray.I think flexplate/flywheel as a possibility too...hopefully!

Id say vert bolts or flex plate issue as well, the noise is external imo.

Amazed over your oem rockers, what cam, ect?

cam specs are lost to the wind when i put them in 2001.
oem seems to work fine. custom ported heads, larger valves.
i worked for a machine shop back in those days.

ill pop open the inspection plate in the morning, possibly the pan.
i hope its the bolts. i don't even recall if i put in grade 8 or 5.
as for windage it does have one but if its getting hit
must mean something caused it to move or something is loose to hit it. ie rod cap/bearing

oh yeah no issues or hard points.
hissing can be heard during partial compression/overlaps/exhaust.
runs fine little metal noise then when shut down can hear that metal rattle.
im starting to think it is the torque converter bolts
will know in a few hours when i take the inspection plate off.

I would take the oil filter off and cut it open or dump the oil out of it into a clean tray first. Depending on what you see that should tell if it is a bearing or something else before you take it apart.

Converter bolts that have came loose will only make noise when they are hitting somewhere behind the block, they make metal when they hit also work scope
Your deal does NOT sound like that at all confused

I would cut the oil filter open but then again I bought a tool from Summit years ago that makes that job as easy as opening up a can of soup.

After listening again it sounds like slop in the converter bolts. The sound is dense.

Every time a converter bolt goes in my car the bolts are wire wheeled, cleaned in lacquer thinner, and red lock-tite is used. Lock-tite does not like oil
