Just thought I would share an update on the Avenger. Last weekend at Earlville we were racing at the NHRA Div 5 race. Ran a 6.66@208 with a .974 60'. Air was decent but not stellar. We are running a Sonny 762 Hemi EFI built by Jerry Janato and tuned by Joe at Hyperactive. Everything is falling in place and every race we pick up. Yes I'm running a Chevy.

It's not really a Chevy, Ford, or Mopar, It's a purpose built race engine, and congrats!

Nothing Chevy about it, as mentioned above it's a purpose built race engine. If I was smart I'd go that direction as well. up

What EFI system are you using? Just thinking that with those big valve covers you could run coils for each cylinder and get rid of the distributor and the coil that you have mounted up front. With individual coils you can adjust the timing for each cylinder. If you have a Holley EFI system it should be plug and play to switch to 8 coils.

Thanks guys. It's a fine line with the Moparts police on what's a mopar and a Chevy engine haha.

Thanks Rick for posting the pictures, for those who don't know Rick Seeman originally built my car and combo.

Im an old school carb guy and decided to go EFI after talking with Joe from Hyperactive. Joe is only 20 minutes from my house and is one of the best in the business. Incredible service at any time of the day. We decided to keep it simple this year. I have a Haltec Elite 2500 with Billet Atomizer injectors, and acufab 8500 throttle bodies. Throttle response is insane, no lag like a carb. Mat the peddle and instantly goes on the brake.

I have a Grid in the car but the Haltec controls everything. Next year we plan on running coils and then can remove the distributor, large coil, and all MSD ignition products. With the Haltec all I have to do is add 8 LS coils and be set. Baby steps for this year.

Should of gone EFI years ago. It's working great and the tuning is so easy. Joe made a few base maps and most of my tuning has been in the hot summer months. So we're still a little lean on this pass but getting close. I also have a spare 822" sonny Hemi that we are going to try the new acufab splits on. It will have 16 injectors (8 in the throttle bodies and 8 in the runners). My 822" makes 1840HP on the current carburetor splits. May loose a little HP with EFI but will probably ET better.

My goal is to be in the 6.50's running NA with the 762. Just about there now just need to work on the fuel map a little. My 822" should run low 6.40's NA.

My Penske 4-way air shocks work wonders for the 60' time. Still more there just need some shock tweaking. In St. Louis we hope to 60' high .960's on a better track. Earlville was never prepped or dragged all weekend. Lot of guys were having problems getting down the track including me on a few passes.

I don't know the Haltec system but I do know that the top of the line EFI systems allow you to get rid of all of the MSD stuff as well as the RacePak. The EFI computer will do all of the data acquisition as well as control the ignition, run the two step, control nitrous or boost, etc.

As you say, the tuning is much easier with EFI since you can see everything that the engine is supposed to do right on the screen. Start retard, high speed retard, high speed lean out, etc. Just a matter of typing the numbers into the correct box and pressing enter. Good luck, looks like a fun ride.

With the Haltec you can get rid of everything, but nothing compares to a Racepak. Racepak is the best system out there with the best software. I tried using the Haltec data and it's very basic. Luckily you can interface the Haltec with the racepak so all the logging is automatically uploaded on my racepak graphs.


Originally I was going to use a big stuff 3 system but very glad I went with the Haltec.

I agree. Good stuff, and Sean is in the fastest div. in the country. T/S and especially T/D really fly there. The ultimate classes as far as I'm concerned. The 762 I was involved with was ultra reliable and ultra consistent. Sonny's parts but Andy Spiegel built. 60K just in parts. It's still running in a TNT car here in div. 7. The other engine I'm impressed with is Joe Roubicek's and it's a Sonny's Big Stuff FI 688. Joe has been pretty much top of the list in div. 7 for the last few years with that combo though there are a couple blown cars that go around him in the order now. It's not even the initial investment with these engines as they only make 40-50 passes before it's 10-20K for freshening. Alguire's car will be all Mopar and I can't wait to see that car go down the track.

I believe that it's 5.0 BS and the heads are slightly canted valves but the intake and exhaust runners are 180 degrees from each other, plug toward the exhaust. You can stick your arm down the runners of these things. The OP can answer this better. If you go to the Sonny's website you can see all the jewelry.

Sean Congrats on making that thing get after it for sure. I have been considering the exact same engine combo for the last year. If I could sell the Predator stuff for ever a decent amount of money I would make the jump for sure. Congrats on the new PB as well!!

Your car is flying and I'm not trying to stir the pot or take anything away from your accomplishment because I like it, wouldn't mind owning it myself.

But to all you guys claiming there is nothing Chevy about it...and technically I'm sure there isn't a single GM part in it but...

The intake runner is located 180 degrees from the exhaust runner which provides a better path for incoming and exiting air. The combustion chamber is designed to unshroud both intake and exhaust valves while locating the spark plug in a more ideal position to enhance flame propagation. Rocker arms are positioned to give excellent valve train geometry. The exhaust rocker is over 75% longer than a wedge chambered head enhancing better spring life and smoother acceleration for modern high lift cams. Most hemispherical cylinder heads have ten 1/2 or 9/16 stud fasteners. Sonny's has incorporated twenty-two 1/2" studs necked down to 7/16. This allows better load distribution and more stud stretch for better clamping force. Supercharged applications can use straight half an inch studs. We used four extra studs in the bottom row to eliminate the stud from intersecting exhaust ports. Combustion chambers can have a range from 65 cc's to 95 cc without welding. Intake and exhaust runners are cast ported and have guide spacing to accommodate a range of 2.450 to 2.700 intake valves and 1.900 to 2.040 exhaust valves. With the chambers ported correctly, the intake will flow 615 cfm @ 1.100 lift with a 2.680 valve and exhaust will flow 425 cfm @ 1.100 lift with a 2.040 valve. We have found that this type head will make more horsepower, on a 800 cu. in. Pro Stock engine. This is because of better quality air on the intake side and a more efficient chamber. Sonny's also will offer rocker arms, valve covers, valve cover gaskets, aluminum blocks, crankshaft, 60 MM or 65 MM camshafts and sheetmetal manifold. This head is available to the general public in raw form or machined in different stages.

And what exactly written in that descriprion describes ANY production Chevy part that exists?? Could just as easily say Ford or Mopar, as it would have as much in common with those two as anything GM ever produced.

Having seen many of them assembled and apart I can assure you it is nothing more than a purpose built race engine. Saying for GM applications is as accurate as saying it is for Audi applications, marketing plain ans simple.

The engine in question is in a Dodge, so I would say this engine is for a MOPAR application!

LOL GM architecture?? nothing GM about it at all. At least a Top Fuel hemi crank as a chance of fitting in a OEM block.

Yeah, that thing has more in common with a Mopar than a Chevy lol. It's marketing, Mopar guys aren't the only "sensitive types" when it comes to brand loyalty, he throws the "FOR GM APPLICATIONS" line in there to make the Chevy guys feel good. Only thing GM there is the bellhousing bolt pattern, and I'm pretty sure that's an option as well

Nothing is based off GM architecture in that engine. From bore centers, to it's opposing valve layout, aong with every other aspect of that awesome poweplant.......ZERO GM. Unlike the current Fuel engines which are based on the 426 HEMI architecture.

So just because they poke, stroke and stretch, it no longer is based on a GM design. So you are saying it was a clean sheet design? Funny but when I look on the site every one of those engines has this on the first line.

It is not a GM design, because it is not based on a GM design. It has nothing to do with being poked, stroked, or stretched. There are plenty of current race engines that are based on a GM design.......including from Sonny's that are poked, stroked and stretched. This ain't one of em' and no amount of spin can change that fact. Of course if you choose to believe otherwise, that is entirely your prerogative.

I take it all back. The 762 doesn't specifically say GM next generation it just says "next generation". laugh2

Sonny is no dummy. His Hemi Mountain Motors use the same amount of Rambler parts as they do GM parts. How many do you think he would sell if he listed them as a Rambler application? Do you think that would be smart?

And as far as the bellhousing goes I've never seen a mountain motor that doesn't use a Chevy bellhousing.

Rick, I understand you built the car and it's a really nice car. Far and above any of my junk and I like it. Nice job to you and Sean but let's stop kidding each other OK? It is what it is, why be ashamed of it? The car flys. Many here, including me would love to own a car like that regardless of what is between the frame rails. It does after all have the plug wires going through the valve covers. laugh2

C'mon MAN! We all know Ken Black doesn't run hemis. As soon as a part is carved or cast from a manufacturer OTHER than the big 3 is it really anyone but the manufacturers part? So I guess those Toyota emblems are on the hats of nitro engine injectors because they are engineered, built and tested by Toyota huh?
