Saw this last week at Autozone.
Has anyone tried this zinc additive?

I've never seen that one. Odd that it has such a 'retro' look to it!
Google it, might be a good product, Shell knows what they are doing..

I read a good article by a Shell engineer that said to much zinc will eat up parts, especially copper.

I tried to look it up but AZ site was offline. In general, a FT cam likes 1200-1500 PPM zinc. Standard new(er) car oil has 600 PPM. Need to do the math based on the additive specs to determine if it can get "standard" car oil into the 1200 - 1500 PPM range with the additive.

Seems to be low concentration, 12oz to only do 5qt?
Go to Advance Auto and get the Lucas zinc, 16oz is good for 3 oil changes.

Found info on the concentration. Shell claims 2000ppm.
Here is the link.

Sorry. My bad. I should have spotted that. Maybe do a phone call
or email to their people.

Go to General Aviation News web site and look for a red plane rolling over on its back which is the July 20th issue No, 14, and read the article by Ben Visser, which is on page 12, it's very Informative.

Thanks for the info thumbs

so I guess I'll keep the silver and copper internal parts to a minimum grin
and the ppm to 1400.

So former Shell Oil engineer Ben Visser's article in July 20 2017 General Aviation News page 12
leads to the conclusion that
a bit less than
1400 ppm of ZDDP
is optimum for wear.

But his comments on non-zinc detergents in some automotive oils burning up and leaving ash deposits that cause pre-ignition pinging also trigger some thoughts.

Which automotive rated oils have the lowest levels of ash deposits?

He was talking about putting auto oil in an aircraft engine. Mobil 1 used to make a aviation oil, but their formula didn't mix well with the lead in the fuel, and they had to buy a bunch of ruined engines, so Mobil 1 doesn't make a aviation oil now. The jest of the story is the amount of zinc that is used is very important.

Would .14 on a spec sheet be 1400? I see Valvoline VR1 has .14 listed. https://sharena21.springcm.com/Public/Do...10-ac162d889bd3

He was talking about using AUTOMOTIVE OILS in an AVIATION engine and why that may be a bad idea.

He goes into how the 1400 PPM level may not be RELEVANT for AUTOMOTIVE engines because they are designed and built DIFFERENT than an AVIATION engine and are not as susceptible to the problems an AVIATION engine is with high levels of ZDDP.

But hey let's take away whatever from wherever.

Sometimes it is good to read things 3 times.
So I did.

He discusses engine lube oils with emphasis on wear additives and detergents.

He believes his readers should learn the practical and legal aspects of both aviation and automotive engine oils.

He goes into detail about ZDDP and its concentration.

He brings up the interesting topic of ash from oil detergents causing pre-ignition.
