I see new reproduction books, three volumes, for $109 on ebay. Do you think this is a decent deal? I really want to get some part numbers soon and am not finding used ones. Also, are repros okay usually or problematic?

Great, thanks for the link. I want to try and grab some NOS parts. I see the pdf says "Light Duty" trucks. My underhood emissions sticker lists my 360-4 as "Medium Duty". So now I'm wondering if that will only effect engine internals, or does that also effect how the truck is equipped in other areas (e.g. suspension)? Thank you.

If you're not in the D700 range, the light duty should have all you need.

I don't understand why it would be "78-81" when '81 started a new generation. Seems like it would be '72-'80 if anything. They are listing dash parts with numbers for example, and they are completely different.

My original manual is 78-80 which I think is pretty common. Just keep a watch on eBay and a well-priced one will pop up. A good source for NOS truck parts is Len Dawson. I got quite a bit from him for my 78 W150. Deception Pass Motor Parts.

The factory manual I have is 78-81.

Funny thing is I listed 4 manuals here a while back 69-71, 72-73, 74-77, and 78-81 and the only one which garnered interest was the 69-71 which there were multiple inquiries.

Used 72-73 book on ebay for $20. I would keep looking and you probably will see a 78-81 come up for a decent price.

Thanks all! Also, looking for a Factory Service Manual, and there are several 1980 PW ones on ebay now, but no 1979. I know a lot is similar, but locking hubs in '80, so I really want the '79 one.

So now that I have had the truck a few weeks, I find it leaks like a sieve. Appears to be mostly engine oil. Also, I see it's overfilled by one quart of oil. Not sure if previous owner hastily poured an additional quart in before truck was picked up by transport company, or if he was actually driving it overfilled, but of course that will blow out the rear main seal.

When I asked if it leaked any fluids, I was told it "dripped" a little bit of oil but not a lot. Yeah, right. Right rear brake is also locked, and several other issues to address that were never mentioned, despite my asking over and over about everything. But that's the risk you take buying sight-unseen. I am still happy to have it because engine sounds great, and 100% rust free and original. This one will stay with me forever.

1 quart of oil too much will not normally come out of the rear seal. In the first place the seal is made to expand against pressure rather than let it leak by. If you are blowing oil out of the engine the problem isn't too much oil. Blowby is caused by compression getting past the piston rings. If the rear main seal is leaking it's because the seal is bad or there is a groove worn into the cranks shaft allowing oil to seep by.

It's a quart high now, but I don't know if he was driving it overfilled by more, and it's down to a quart now. It's not smoking out of the exhaust.

I'm not getting blowby, I'm getting leaking.

Geez, I'm a dope sometimes. This was supposed to be posted under my other thread on leaks. I'm going to copy and paste it over to my thread on whether it's necessary to lift engine to change oil pan gasket. Sorry!

Still, over filling won't cause leaking at the rear main seal.

I've seen both 78-80 and 78-81 for the parts book.
There are a couple 1979 service manuals on ebay right now.

I'm only interested in the Factory Service Manual. No 1979 ones right now on Ebay. I check daily. Several 1980 ones and while similar I'm sure, locking hubs in 1980 so I really want the '79 one. But thanks. Larry
