just windowed my 543 in my wagon tuesday nite. looking at options with 5.7/6.4 from mother mopar. wife works at mopar dealer so price could be very good. my question is this=why does mopar recommend using a stick shift trans with the wiring harness/pcm set up? i would use a 727 with manual shift valve body i think. any insight to this swap is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance rick.

I think any non computer controlled transmission(or stand alone controlled) would be ok.

Hi Rick,

Mopar recommends the stick shift because the wiring kit can't control the new transmissions that are out there. A manual valve body 727 would do fine.

I have a 6.4 short block and the wiring kit, I think it will be a good setup for sure.

This is a school project in a 68 Charger. Don't have it running yet but we have high hopes!!

From what I understand the 6.4 is excellent in our older cars.

Your project sounds very interesting and I wish you the best of luck on your endeavors!

I used it in my Dakota. Absolutely love it. Very easy, great instructions/diagrams. Zero complaints.

As mentioned, the manual transmission is recommended due to kickdown issues, so a manual VB trans would also be fine.

I did a 6.1 hemi with a 518 and used a cable drive throttle body and used a cable for the kickdown... wasn't a direct fit, but did the job. It's nice to be able to go to the local parts store and pick up parts any time.

I bought an after market transmission controller for a NAG1. It has the speed sensor on the output shaft of the transmission. Works great and I get 23mpg avg on the hiway!!! 5.7/NAG1 5 speed auto/2:76 gear in an 8 3/4 rear end.

You had a heck of a time getting it to work though didn't you? You also used a slipper driveshaft?
If someone could come out with a ready to go controller for a NAG1 it would be a great transmission for any muscle car. Your 2.76 ratio with a NAG is like a 727 with a 4.10 off the line

I have the 6.4 setup with the Mopar wiring and computer setup. I'm currently putting it in my 73 Duster along with a manual 5 speed, don't have it running yet, but getting close. Have the wiring to do yet, and going back and making sure everything is tight. The one thing I don't like and correct me if I'm wrong, is that the current controllers on the market will not allow you to modify or tune the Mopar computer that comes with the kit even though it is unlocked. Will post some pics soon as I figure out how.

As far as I know, the PCM should be tuneable with HPTuners software or Diablo, or similar.

For some reason, can't seem to find the pictures of the motor I have on my phone. I'll upload some later.

Edit: tried to link a few from my imgur account, they aren't showing up though.

I bought the new install kit from Mopar for a 6.4 hemi but after reading the instructions, it says that it won't work with my 2012 6.4 crate engine.
Wonderful. Anyone know how to make it work with the earlier engine?

You will need a tone ring for the newer engines. Molnar makes a nice one.

Pull the crank, change the tone ring, and I believe you are good to go.

I'm in the same dilemma. I have the earlier 6.4 and bought the install kit. The older 6.4's don't have knock sensors and the new kit has connections for them. I read that you can eliminate the knock sensors but not sure what else is different. I need to figure out if I can make this kit work.

I'm in the process of swapping a Hellcat engine into a 71 Barracuda and plan on using the new kit from Chrysler. I think I am going to use a GM 4L60 trans because it has a stand alone harness for it too. Car is set up with 3:45 gears.
