Will someone from the Mopar Knowledge Base enlighten me as to whether or not I can order up a reman police steering box for an 89 Gran Fury and bolt it into my 73 Barracuda?

If so, are there any caveats with the hose fittings or anything I need to look out for?

The reman parts store units are a crap shoot as to quality. They only thing they do is clean them up and install new seals. The box itself could be worn out. Is there a reason why you don't want to get a completely rebuilt box from Firm Feel or Steer and Gear?

Firm Feel offers three different stages of "firmness".

1973 should have the larger shaft, and I know Eberg used to use the dippy cop boxes so I think you should be ok. Why a box for an 89 Fury? The remans won't be 'select fit' and the factory ran out of NOS cop boxes a long time ago.

Also, speaking from experience, I didn't notice any real difference going from a used, stock 73 box (about 50k original miles) to a "Level 2" box. I did upgrade to the fast ratio pitman so it was necessary to get the stops where I wanted them but next time around I'll be going with a basic reman box.

Advanced auto carries them from a specific rebuilder. Don't remember their name.
Better than average on rebuilding.

Anyway, I had to take parts like the hose fitting pieces off my old box.
It came with new seals, o ring and copper crush washer.

Cost.... The reason I'm looking for alternatives to FF/Steer n gear.

As to why the Gran Fury box, just going through Rock Auto I know and Diplomats/Gran Fury's came with the cop box.

Well, I learned something today. There is an A-1 Cardone steering box with part number 276515 that appears to actually be the police box. It lists a 3.5 turns lock-to-lock and the others are 4 turns. P/N 276515 !?! Hefty core charge of $100. Plus E-berg says to stay away from remanufactured parts store boxes.

If cost is a big concern and your existing box still "feels" fine, you can just buy the seals and install them yourself. That would be your cheapest option. Personally, I'd be worried about a parts store replacement box being worse then the one I was removing.

I got a "cop box" from Advanced Auto about 15yrs ago and it was a huge improvement.'
Nice thing about Advanced Auto is the parts have a lifetime warranty.
I really question whether these "speciality" builders are really worth the 3x cost difference.

That Cardone part is the one I have in mind.

Unfortunately, my existing box has a much larger than usual dead spot and I over tightened the worm gear when I was young and dumb.

I've actually had really good luck with Cardone over the years, steering racks, brake calipers, etc on a lot of different cars. I don't think I've ever taken anything back of theirs. I did have one Jeep GC front drive line that was dirty as heck and had a coat of paint over the dirt, but it worked just fine.

You will not get a "cop box" back from a rebuilder.
