Is there quality difference on re-production chrome bumpers between AMD & GoodMark and/or is there another source available besides sending them to a chrome shop...Thanks Gary !!

I looked at some of the repop bumpers at the Nats.. and was dissapointed with the quality. I would recommend plating a good core

I have a set of Goodmark bumpers on a Chevy pickup and the chrome is ok/nice driver quality. If you sight down them lengthwise there are some minor stamping waves/choppiness. Most people wouldn't notice.

If your picky and want really nice bumpers you'll want to step up to the plate and have a set re-chromed by a good shop. The $200.00 repo bumpers look fine until you put them side by side against ones that cost 2x that to re-chrome.

Gary if you have good cores I would get them done or replaced by Tri City Plating. I got a pair from them and they have held up Great and Look Good. I gave them my cores and got a redone set from them.

I remember reading a post a few years ago where one of two of these aftermarket bumper suppliers was better then the other because they were chromed in the US ( Michigan?) vs. overseas or Mexico or something like that. I can't recall the exact info, does anyone remember?

Tri City is GOOD.
Bumper Boys is TERRIBLE !!! Chrome peeled and got rust in 1 year on a car that is stored 6 months out of the year.

Try Dave at Roseville. He has or at least had those better bumpers as Suregrip mentions. The ones to ask for is Keystone. Here is a link to a discussion

Yes, the Keystone bumpers are chromed in the USA. I need to talk to Dave about bumpers for my Dart. He lists a pair for a little over $600. Tri-City is probably around $450 each to rechrome.

Tri-City has rechromed my cores. Always happy with the results. A little more than new repo's, but worth it IMO.

I have a set of Goodmark's for a 69 RR. For a driver you can't beat them for a show car or all out resto you probably want to replate a good set of cores. HOWEVER, if you don't use a top notch shop and pay stupid money, chances are you'll end up with a lower quality finish than the Goodmarks.

Here are the issues with mine.
On the front bumper the grind/buff/polish/plate in one of the horizontal creases is less than perfect in one area. You need to get down and look at it straight on to see it.
On the rear there is a small spot where they hit it with a grinder then didn't fill/grind/buff it out before plating. Again you need to get down and look at it straight on to see it.

The plating is fine.

My overall opinion is: they're as good as the hundreds of thousands that were cranked out of the factory in '69 - they were never as good as what people expect when they have them redone.

At Carlisle I took a close look at AMD's. They're no better. You might get a flawless set if you could hand pick from a dozen or so but who'd let you do that !!!

If I send a set to Tri-city, will they work out the dings and dents that a 40 year old bumper gets? I'd love to have the original bumpers back for the car. The front is actually pretty nice. The rear has a dent in the corner and a couple dings along the face. Just curious.

They usually knock the dings out unless you tell them not to.

I've used Tri City with excellent results. On my Demon,I may go with aftermarket bumpers, mainly because its a street/strip car now.

Yes, they will look like new. I sent my A12 RR bumpers off. Rear had holes for hitch, bent, etc. Came back like brand new.

I used repops on a 68 GTX, and they were nice, but...the chrome on repops is prone to dulling fairly quickly from the exhaust tips.

You hit the nail on the head with your post!

However, IMHO the AMD's are better than the GoodMarks, most people have forgotten what a "factory" bumper looked like when new, or perhaps never seen one? most have been "spoiled" looking at triple chromed trim and bumpers on show cars over the decades...

If you want a factory appearing double plated looking bumper then an AMD or GoodMark or NOS will fit the bill, otherwise if a showcar finish is desired, finding a shop for triple plate (copper) work is then your choice

Keystone bumpers are AMD repros that have been "re-finished-chromed" by Keystone facilities

And as far as "hand picking" an AMD/GoodMark set, find a local supplier and ask if you can go thru the inventory to search for a "perfect" specimen, I've done it, I just tell them it's best that I walk away with a desired set, rather than constantly returning/rejecting a shipped purchase and aggravating both of us...

I wonder where you'd have to live to have a "local supplier" that would have multiple bumpers in inventory !!

Fortunately for me I have Auto Body Specialties in the neighboring State of Conn, they stock an assortment of AMD, GoodMark, Sherman, and a few assorted other vendors of sheetmetal, fiberglass body panels, bumpers, etc, a little bit of a ride from Mass, but nice to sort thru sheetmetal, bumpers etc, and avoid shipping "rash" from the UPS/FedEx gorillas

I also have a Keystone facilities and headquarters in the neighboring towns of Norton Mass and Seekonk Mass, and a Veng warehouse (Division of Keystone) that stocks OEM/collision and repro sheetmetal/bumpers from 1970's to present models

I'm sure if you look around you'll find a warehouse or distributor locally?

I just looked at an AMD 70 roadrunner rear bumper and will say its way nicer than a factory bumper ever was, none of those lines that original stuff had, and it actually fits. If you have bumpers fit them to the car first, then have them rechromed for the best outcome. If you have no bumpers buy AMD,fit them, then either use or rechrome.
