What's a good price for a Std. bore 440 HP block complete except no intake and manifolds? Looked at one locally but wasn't sure if price was too high.

Thanks in advance

$500-$1500 depends on condition/completeness

They're looking for $1500. bores look clean with no ridges and it turns over by hand nice and smoothly. Has heads disassembled and no intake or exhaust.

It's not worth that as an engine, but it's worth it if you have a 1970 that needs an HP 440and the engine build date is before the car assembly date. It wouldn't be numbers matching but it would be as close as you could get.

If you just want a 440 to build it is way too much.

There are very few things that make an HP engine. Camshaft is larger, it's a 3-bolt cam, HP valvesprings, the stamp on the block, exhaust manifolds, carburetor.

Nothing in the list makes the block, heads, crank, or rods special, except the HP stamp. I'd guess pistons, too, but I'm not dead nuts certain.

Chrysler made four B engines for every one 440.

There should be a few more answers to the post.

R.

If it will make a .020-.030 overbore with a std crank and good heads, it is worth 1500 to someone who needs the big rods and balancer for a restoration. Hp stamp is worth something as well. If you just want a core to build a hot motor, look for a core in the 750 range.

So the biggest difference is possibly not being external balanced just being a 69 engine.

That is a 69 engine installed in a late 69 car. The E is the code for a 69 car. Look on the pan rail on the right side for a bunch of stamped numbers. It will have the vin number and we might could find the car it belongs to.

If that is the matching numbered engine to a 69 six pack Bee, it's worth a whole lot more than 1500 bucks!

that late in the model year may only have a partial VIN on the block.

That's a very late 69 motor so probably worth about $1000

This is true. My a12 only has a partial vin. However, I think Dan can take the number off almost any block and tell us more about the car than I would ever think possible. Some day he may be able tell us the color of the car! Lol.

Yes, motor and trans are matching. The tranny was sold off long before I got the car. However, I talked to the second owner and he told me the story of buying the 4 speed back from the third owner. He sold it to guy I knew and he sold it to a close friend. I was able to buy it back. It was stolen from me and I searched all the local wrecking yards and found it! I got it back again. It stays under my pillow at night now. 😜

9A301796 is a known 440 SIX PACK Super Bee

can't prove it, but the way VINs were assigned - it's either a M-code BEE or a CANADA spec. 4bbl GTX - my money's on the SIX PACK Bee!

hammer wonder why someone tried to obliterate the VIN? spank

I would grab the block for sure, if it is in the price range we discussed. You may find the owner with all the resources we have today

Or you could pay the $1500, sit on it for years hoping to reunite it with the car, only to find out the original car is long gone,or the current owner doesn't care? or already has a "matching numbers" driveline in it, does the OP want a build-able motor, or does the OP want to play good Samaritan and reunite the long lost block with the hapless soul searching grieving owner? say the OP buys the block, advertises it, is contacted, only to find it was stolen years ago, now has to deal with a miffed owner, or insurance company...

IMHO, buy the block if it's within your price range, rebuild it, mill the pads off, re-stamp it with #'s of choice or leave it bare, done deal...

That would be fraud.

Not many here are fakers & frauds.

Encouraging others to commit fraud is VERY low class.

Oooh, I know you've made your views known about this on other threads, but the OP just wanted opinions on this specific block's WIW. He got that answer, and suggesting a restamp doesn't add to it.

If you leave a bank vault unlocked, you don't have to tell a criminal how to open it. They'll already know.
