'79 Power Wagon, 360. Looks to be leaking pretty good from pan, maybe rear main, so looking to replace both seals. It's tight in there. Will engine have to come out, or at least one or both motor mounts unbolted and engine lifted some?
Also, I know pan is different shape on the truck vs car, but do they use the same oil pan gasket? I have a nice gasket set I was going to use on my E58 Aspen and never got around to using it. Can I use it on the truck?
Thanks. Learning as I go.

Ok, thanks. Glad I can use the same gasket. Been hanging on to this high quality gasket since I had my E58 Aspen "for someday". Well the day is here now that I scored me a 360 Power Wagon. Rednuck: it's deff a 360 gasket.
Thanks.

drop the pan and then drop oil pump off into pan.
no lifting engine needed.
you can work the pan out and leave the oil pump/pick-up tube and lift engine about 2" off the mounts.
if rubber biscut mounts are not soft you may be able to work the pan off with oil pump on and no lifting also.
318 and 360 pans are different at the rear end seal = 360 smaller pan end seal.
Thanks buddy! Good to see you logged in. Been thinking about you, hoping you're holding up ok. Thanks for advice! buildanother, thank you too.

Check oil pressure sender before disassembling truck.
R. Good point, I will. I see whatever it is, it continues to leak long after the truck has been parked and not run.

I did get a little bit of time to clean underneath (lots of Simple Green and paper towels!) but didn't have a chance to finish so I could run truck. Definitely oil there, and some trans fluid too. I should be transfer tag next week, finish the cleaning and checking out some of these leaks.

So now that I have had the truck a few weeks, I find it leaks like a sieve. Appears to be mostly engine oil. Also, I see it's overfilled by one quart of oil. Not sure if previous owner hastily poured an additional quart in before truck was picked up by transport company, or if he was actually driving it overfilled, but of course that will blow out the rear main seal.
When I asked if it leaked any fluids, I was told it "dripped" a little bit of oil but not a lot. Yeah, right. Right rear brake is also locked, and several other issues to address that were never mentioned, despite my asking over and over about everything. But that's the risk you take buying sight-unseen. I am still happy to have it because engine sounds great, and 100% rust free and original. This one will stay with me forever

Looks like I'm going to have to pull engine after all. Diagnosis from mechanic is rear freeze plug appears to be leaking, so it looks like it'll be easier to pull engine then it would be to pull the transfer case to get to that freeze plug (all of them while it's out). It's leaking out of Timing Cover, Oil Pan too, and probably other places, so it may be best to pull it and re-gasket and seal everything. Engine sounds and runs great. I'm going to try and tow it to the body shop and get the engine compartment painted (I am determined to change the color so now would be the time to start with engine compartment and do it right). When I say "try", I mean try and afford all this at the same time. The truck is plastidipped black (hate it) over the original silver which is badly faded. I really love the browns and blues of the era, but leaning toward brown. I love this brown on this Macho.

So here's what I just spent a bunch of money on...going to go ahead and pull engine and do much more than first anticipated. Doing more than needed right now, but while it's out I'm going to do a bunch of preventative stuff too:

Update: Did decide to pull engine. It was that or the transfer case to get to at least one freeze plug that was bad, and with the other engine work that needed to be done, decided to pull engine. So it's out now (some pics to come). Replacing all the freeze plugs with brass. Some were really bad and leaking. They were steel. Putting in new cam and lifters, pretty close to stock specs, wanting smooth idle but a little more torque at bottom end. Discovered some worn cam bearings, so new cam bearings going in as well. Already had new dbl roller timing chain with tensioner and HD water pump ready to go on too. Good thing. We could almost remove chain without unbolting. Truck has factory oil pressure gauge so I got new sender and switch, and it was definitely leaking from switch, so that'll clear up one oil leak. The rear main seal was hard as a rock. Guessing original. Cleaning up everything now for some Mopar Turquoise and hopefully start reassembly next week. Steering brace to frame will go in while engine out.
