recently had a fiberglass hood made for my 72 charger and after a couple of days in the sun it is starting to lift in the middle and no longer flush with the fenders. is this normal? is there anything that can be done about it?

If you are using stock hood hinges and springs, take the springs off and use a hood prop or use lighter tension springs. Early AAR AND T/A E-bodies with glass hoods have the same issue.

Welcome to the wonderful world of fiberglass. The factory painted these with black Organasol because they tended to look crappy with changing weather conditions. It's always going to do a little something. Get it the best you can and walk away. BTW Car looks great!

I bought my fiberglass hood back in 1975, it sagged right from the day I put it on. To fix it at the time I fiberglass a U shaped piece of 1/2" electrical conduit to the underside. No sag after almost 40 years.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

laugh2..... try a lightweight race hood. Fits different as the temp changes.

My glass hood is a race type hood as its a light hood and its to thin on the edges to put it on hindges. It will sit up a tad in the corners when the eng is cold but after I drive a bit and the eng warms up the edges drop some and then sit a tad low. Not much I can do about it as I just figure thats one of the quirks of a glass hood. Ron

So many folks complain about glass hoods being junk. From poor fitment to not taking paint...

How did corvette make entire car bodies from it for so many years? Are they still using glass or is it urethane now?

I don't think the hood is junk, I'm quited pleased with how it looks and functions just did not expect the movement with the temperature. Now that the car is in garage the hood is back to the orginal position.

I wonder if they were just much, much thicker? Thick enough that there's no weight savings over steel....

I know many glass hoods are thicker then mine at the edges. We used to call them street or race hoods as mine is to thin near the edges to mount it on the hinges so it has to be a lift off unless a good glass worker made it thicker. But the hood itself seems thinner then the stock type that came on 6 pack cars. So I would be pretty sure the Corvette had thicker figerglass on most of the car. My back two corners only sit up mayne about 1/8 to 1/4" when cold but when I drive it and the eng warms up they end up dipping about 1/4". Just catch me when the eng is about 160 and the hood fits perfect. grin Ron

Corvettes are engineered to be glass from day one, so they can add reinforcements and tweak the shapes to minimize the bending. Lightweight race parts aren't concerned with it. The "street" parts are usually just reinforced around the hinges and hood catches, but they can't do much for the overall shape of the hood after the fact. twocents

Nice! I see you are running that Mancini tall throttle bracket. My Dart has that one as well. I went ahead and painted it black. Are those elastomeric bumpers or painted? I'm a blackwall out kinda person as well. Makes your rims look sharper! Nice car Greg! up

Thanks
the bumpers are painted, much cheaper than re chroming . I'm a, less is more, kind of guy. needed the tall bracket when i put a one inch spacer under the carb . the hood and scoop with the spacer dropped my et almost 4 tenths and increased the mph 3.5 mph
