A friend of mine just bought a 1969 Roadrunner built at Lynch Road on March 14, 1969. The car looks to be very original. He looked for the VIN on the engine block and he found the pad where the numbers would be stamped but it appears to be blank. Is this a service replacement block or is possible that Lynch Road made a mistake and never stamped it? I know Lynch Road was known for a lot of errors and oddball assembly practices, especially in 1969. All other VIN numbers are present, car has a mint broadcast sheet and fender tag. Transmission has the VIN number stamped like normal.

It's easy to tell if it was a replacement block. Check the casting date on side of engine and if it is after the build date on fender tag then there's your answer if it's a replacement block. Now if it is a casting date before build date then more investigation will be needed. twocents

Also look for a warranty tag riveted to side of block and or a large WT on top assy date pad. scope

He needs to start looking at the other stamps on the engine like the assembly date , if the trans is stamped the engine should be also as they were both done at the same time, by the same person, with the same tools.

There are a lot less ACTUAL cars with warranty replaced engines than there are currently owned wink

running up my post count some more .

The block cast date being after the car SPD is not definitive. It could be a replacement block obtained at any point in the last 48 years, with the car possibly having gone thru other misc blocks as well. To know if its the original replacement, only paperwork could prove it.

The block tells are no non-factory machining of the stamp pads, top pad with a "WT" (or "TW") and an "S". The tag would be on a warranty block, but most likely would be long gone, but a rivet hole near freeze plug may be there still. Dealers may have stamped an under-warranty block/trans with the VIN, but not always. But an over-the-counter replacement (NOT under warranty) probably would not have the tag or obviously any VIN.

Oh, and filed under "anything is possible", IIRC there was a block in question recently that was top pad restamped (no VIN), factory font as a replacement, that was deduced to maybe an assembly line reject, fixed/retested or whatever, then issued later as a replacement.

But if his block (383?) is blank and no milling marks, 99% chance it is replacement.

What oddball assembly practices do you know of?

I mean that Lynch Rd was a little different than other plants. The fender tags were different. The GTX that I recently sold had an error on it. Fender tag said one thing, broadcast sheet said another. That's all.
