When is a good idea to switch from 1 7/8" to 2" headers? Car is 3100 lbs, mild 446 ci sees 6300 rpm max.

Car is a Duster, 440 .030 over 10.5:1, .590 solid cam, 440 source heads, Victor 440 intake, 750 carb (will be going bigger in the future), 727 w/5000 stall conv, Dana 60 4.56 gears. Has been 10.7's. I had Hooker 1 7/8 fender-well headers on the car but disliked that I was limited on front tire size. I took the inner fender-wells out, put the bar from the cage to the front of the frame to tie it all together, but in doing so the way I ran the bars I am unable to run the fender-well headers unless I customize them. So I bought a set of TTI 2" headers. Car really didn't pickup or lose anything in 60', ET or mph wise. TTI fit nicely, but are a HUGE pain to work on. I have another car that I have 1 7/8 TTI's on that I will be changing from BB to SB and thought about putting them on the car to make it easier to work on, or maybe try and modify the fender-wells headers I have to make them fit.

I'd say that if you can use the 1 7/8" go for it because the 2" can be a pain. I have always used the 2" Hedman slip fits and even those are are not fun.

Have a great day

A 446 at 6300 rpm does not need a 2 inch header. 1.875 should be fine, 1.750 stepped to 1.875 might be perfect.

I used 2 inch pipes on my 499 and went 5.61 in the eight (never got around to making the 2-1/4 ones), so I don't see why 1-7/8 won't work well for you.

I ain't a drag racer but do you have any thoughts on what (other) system/part might be holding you back/need improvement/changeing/altering?is traction good. is 60ft time good. there used to be some DC charts on matching ET/MPH to weight etc (iirc) to see if there was an issue.

Pretty sure the carb is to small as it is only a 750. Waiting on a buddy to let me try his 950 to see what that does for the car. I just changed converters to one I used to run it it absolutely did not work, lost 2 tenths in the 1/8th, so I need to switch it back to the one I had in the car before I do more "experimenting"

For that combo, imo, if you're only turning it 6300, you're not revving it high enough for the 2" to be of any real benefit.

The 1 7/8" Hooker fenderwells make big tq numbers, in part because they're so long........so you def would have taken a little step backwards in the lower part of the power curve by using 2" TTi's instead.
May not matter with 5000 stall though.

If you're primarily running 1/8 mile, then it would be even harder to exploit and possible gains from the 2" headers.

Not what you asked...... But...... The cr seems a bit low for a 270@.050 cam.
Not sure it would be worthwhile to swap it, just saying it wouldn't have been my first choice, especially for the modest rpm you're turning.

What are the performance numbers out if the car?

If I were to put 1 7/8" TTI on it, would adding a collectors help make up for the shorter length pipes vs the long lengths of the Hooker Fenderwells?

header primary tube length is a seperate area, involves pressure wave tuning, reversion, all that scientific stuff.

Every V8 Mopar engine I've drag raced and tuned like collector extensions, even 4 speed SS Hemi cars like them up
They all also like the H pipes on the collector extensions also with open headers thumbs shock scope

no idea but the Hooker 5209's are one of the easiest headers to put on a car...
