probably head gaskets, a small leak might not put gasses in the coolant till its under a heavy load.

Maybe you should explain exactly what you mean by "it's running hot" first before you go running to buy parts. smile

when you read the problem it says temp gauge starts creeping up.rad was showing signs of age, water pump bearing had massive play in shaft,t- stat was replaced before 6 years ago. not throwing parts at it, eliminated some obvious.could be a lot of different problems, asking if anyone else experienced and solved what is and isn't normal operating temps.thanks for anyones help

We have worked on tons of them in my shop, 2 are in here right now for head gaskets and cracked heads. I don't stock much for new parts here except oil, oil filters and 4.7 head gaskets and timing chain sets. The symptoms are exactly what you describe and typically begin after overheating because of a faulty water pump or radiator. The 4.7 can not stand to be overheated at all, pretty much instant failure of a head gasket when the gauge goes over 1/2 way and 3/4 pretty much means cracked heads.

Even easier and more concise is just do a chemical test of the coolant for exhaust gasses, napa carries the tester and it takes about 30 seconds. I buy a lot of those 4.7 rigs and never buy one without testing it and most of em are blown head gaskets or cracked heads.

HotRodDave is the expert on here for the 4.7.
He will also tell you that it is very easy to warp the heads on the 4.7 and if you have to replace a head gasket, replace the timing chain set and adjusters.
