I measured my input shaft and the TC nose as installed and the thickness of the nose of the TC and I have .236 that the TC is not sliding in to meet the front of the input to bottom out.
What can I be bottoming out on?

Are you talking about the max lug pump gear?

Mine had a machined step around the entire pump gear that the converter kept getting stuck on. I finally pulled the pump and gear, and smoothed the machined part with a sanding roll.

In this photo you can see the machined step on the inside of the gear. In my case the lugs were not a problem.

I do have my old 9.5" but it may not be the same in all ways.I may try to dig it out of storage. Thanks for the gear pic,I am going to try to look at that past the pump if I can with a light, idk if I can measure anything.
Is the lug in the gear taller to the front of the trans or to the center of the trans?Mine is .760" tall

I checked the drive slot on the converter and it is only .660 where the gear is .760 so that could give me some room.I wonder where the other .096 is deducting for the front nose thickness of .040.
I just remembered that the vert should be .010+ off the pump preferred so I need to find the other .096 in the stater or something. But I can only gain room if I grind the drive slot.

Let us know what you find out.
Might call John Cope and ask him?

I am using a modified pump from Cope.

Anyone else using the maxlug pump gear?

The least invasive move looks like a .090 midplate still.I have room to the stater if I was to grind the vert slot

I would have to measure again but I think I have another .075 to the stater so I would likely grind .050 off the tc pump slot and use a shim at the flex plate the same size.I hope to talk to PTC next wk while I wait to align hone my block.

If you push the converter into the trans as far as it will go and spin it, can you feel the converter bowl rubbing on the front pump housing? Some pump housings need to be machined for converter bowl clearance.

I am going to say no,the rotation is smooth.I have to grasp what a converter bowl is.I get confused easy.I measured all I could inside the TC and the trans output shaft, pump and looking at them the trouble starts at the tc drive slots for the pump.
ps: sounds like the bowl is where the pump gear is and where the tc drive slot is.Thank you for you help!
2)here is a pic of the tc parts to help me with the names, place of them.

I just installed my trans again this time running the max lug gear. I got mine from TCS and it was too thick for both pumps I had here by .0015. Had to have it machined for fitment. final mock up before assembly last week.

I don't see the ridge on the gear when I look in my trans past the seal like it is in upside down.I have to dbl check but I am pretty sure.I wonder how tall that ridge is and would give me some room with the drive on the TC that I need.

The "bowl" mentioned is actually the impeller. Have you tried installing the converter in to the pump with the pump out of the trans ? It's not uncommon for the impeller hub to hang up on the inner rotor - and in the case of this rotor set - with its poor design - it really has little lead-in chamfer like the standard rotors.

My gear lugs don't have the lip like shown and I can't see it or get a hook behind it if it was in backwards but it measures around .747 + [what I posted earlier.]Even if I had the pump out it would not show the fit problem with the drive hub, pump gear.

I don't take things apart as fast anymore till I check as much as I can so people can't say well you changed things by taking it apart.

I fished in the gear more and the lip on the tab is to the back of the trans on both of my transmissions!I also spotted it visually.

they are the ONLY vendor of a gear like this that has that info with an ad for the part. I bought mine from PATC as they had it in stock and even the part didn't come with info pertaining to this nor did their web site. Would be an easy miss for sure...

btw my gear measured .7478 and the outer gear was .748+. using a quicky dial caliper I thought all was "ok". Micrometer said otherwise.

I had the trans built for me.
