This has been going on for over 1300 miles now

It’s an early 2003 ram diesel, automatic 35 gallon fuel tank with 225,000 miles

I initially thought it was a bad tank of fuel, but it’s been going on for too long

I did change the fuel filter shortly after the problem started

As your driving along the truck loses throttle, like you're out of gas, but a second or 2 later its ok and you keep running

It’ll only stall if you're stopped or going very slow, like under 15 mph

It appears to be effected by stopping and going

I can travel 300 miles and it doesn’t happen, but if I’m stopping and going a lot (driving in an area with a lot of stop lights) it can do it as often as every 5 or 10 miles. But not always

It was also doing it when I would first start and take off after 1 mile, then wouldn’t do it again, until after I would stop and then go again

It’s not the most consistent, but the above is the best handle on it that I can get

I was thinking either something in the fuel tank or the lift pump (fuel pump) in the tank

Any ideas?

Lift pump rear of filter housing. They make a replacement thats direct fit without putting one in the tank, aftermarket. Throttle position sensor they also make one that is after market without changing entire assembly. Rear of high pressure fuel pump CP3 is a small fuel control actuator that can be purchased separately but only from cummins not chrysler. These are the 3 things to try first. Try the cummins diesel chat board. If you don't have any luck with that ask Donnie Kirkland ( or Fuddy) if he has some barbwire that will fix it for sure.

Boy you got me there, i didnt realize that it was you until the end.

where would i look for the lift pump and the TPS that you referred to?

i think i should check inside of the tank in case there is a rag or something like that in there maybe

or i can check with Fuddy Conklin, lol

thanks

First thing is to check fuel pressure.

where is a good place to tap into to check it?

and since the problem is very intermittant wouldnt the fuel pressure gauge have to be conected when the problem happens?

im pretty confident its fuel related

good place to check it is with a scan tool that will show "set point" and "rail psi". IF you still have the "walker pump" (the one on the canister....that fails often and makes you walk) I'd install an in tank set up so quick it would make your head spin.

If you always wanted something like an Edge tuner, this would be a good time to purchase. I have and Edge in my 2003 CTD for the gauges. Plugs into your OBDII under the dash and give you multiple readouts, including rpm, temp, trans temp, EGT (if you add the sensor), and fuel rail pressure (so you can watch your fuel rail pressure drop when the truck stalls out). I'm guessing lift pump as well.

Lift pump is on the rear of fuel filter canister held only two screws , Connector is on the bottom. The fuel control is on the rear of the high pressure pump. Type in fuel control solenoid (fca) for 2003 cummins on eBay it will come up. If you want my old lift pump that worked i will send it to you. mine was the early 2003 . My problem was starting and it was bad injectors. Let me know

more than likely you have several of the issues mentioned above. the problem centers around the bad quality of diesel fuel available today.poor quality diesel(every where today)with excessive moisture(water) and other particulates or contaminates are extremely hard on your injectors and cause injector failure and injection pump failure.the lift pump and fuel filter are inadequate for the poor quality of fuel available today. the cure for the future is a filtering system designed to remove excessive air, water and other contaminates and consistent lift pressure. AIR DOG is one of the most effective but there are others. Air Dog approximately $500.00. If your injectors are bad you will need to replace all injectors and feed tubes. $1600.00 - $2400.00, use cummins parts only. then purchase Air Dog system and I recommend using Lucas Fuel Additive to help with lubrication of the injection pump since lead has been removed from fuel. hope this helps

replaced the lift pump with a FASS pump.
that took care of the cutting out issue.

but it doesnt feel like it has the same power/acceleration that it did,

there arent any adjustments so wondering why that is, especially since the original pump had issues
