451" low-deck wedge that will see 6500 RPM. have a 7 qt. pan, and will be running an HV pump. Is it a mandatory upgrade?

run the samm rpm on my 440 with std 3/8 pickup and no prob .
7 qt pan , hv pump , .0025 rods ,.003 mains , 20 w 50 oil!

Absolutely not I use the stock mopar 3/8 pickup and the Mopar 1970-71 Hemi- 440 6 pak oil pan, 7 quarts with the oil filter I use the full groove Federal Mogul truck main bearings and the Federal Mogul race rod bearings, both have a lot of oil clearances so the motor flows a lot of oil thru it while being run. I shift it at 7000+ at the track and I drive it a little (less than a thousand miles a year) on the street so the oil temps get up to or above 180F regularly on the street. I use the standard 5W20 wt. Valvolline non synthetic oil and I do inspect the motor regulary, no lubrication problems so far in three years of racing and street driving I do use a crankshaft scraper(.060 max clearances to the rotating parts) and a stock Mopar windage tray and a Melling high volume oil pump with the bypass spring cut down to provide 68 lbs when hot at 6800 rpm and higher, maybe I should try another spring and cut about a 1/4 turn less off of it that would probally give me around 73 lbs at 7300 rpm that or use 10w30 wt oil IHTHs. The reason I use the stock 3/8 pick ups now is I have had several motors crack the oil pump boss in the block when changing them to the 1/2 pipe threads for the 1/2 pick up Not good

which part # would those main bearings be?


The Summit part # for the Federal Mogul narrow full groove main bearings for the early (pre 1972) 440 blocks is FEM-4095M and the early low deck blocks are part number FEM-4094, Summit doesn't stock them but they will drop ship them directly to you I was looking at Summits commercail site today and couldn't find them in thier bearing listings, I typed those part numbers in and they come up without any description of what they fit or what years they fit I like them a lot and use them all of the time I don't know the part numbers for the later blocks, 1973 and on, sorry

I agree that you will be fine with the stock 3/8. My 440 is very mild in my opinion but I did go to 1/2" as my brother had tap I needed so I figured it cant hurt for sure. But you need to be careful when drilling it out. I shift about 6200 with my 906 headed 440. Ron

The 1/2 pickup is nice to have but unless the shop is set up with a way to do it I wouldn't bother. It is easy to ruin the block if the setup isn't correct.

NEVER try to drill the passage by hand , the drill can have a mind of it's own ... bought the shirt and HAD the cracked block to prove it

A easier mod might be to port your oil pump and enlarge the internal passages; chamfer the sharp right angle turn within the pump housing itself, it's an extremely shrp angle as deleivered I usually radius the turns with a balloon or acorn shaped carbide bit.

Even the 1/2" pick-up is limited by the 3/8-7/16" internals of the pump body anyway. my there'd be little net benefit to a 1/2" pickup anyway if you don't port the pump

Chamfering the pump inlet passage in the block (where it mates to the pump) is worth some easy flow too.

I've used ported stock BB pumps to 7500RPM and most HV pumps actually use the same restricted pump Head as the stock ones do.
