I guess I just bought a 440-6, 4spd, Dana, Cuda that has been converted to a auto years ago. Looking at my fender tag, it's not coded for having a pistol grip so my question is what would it have had for a shifter?

I believe in 70 the ONLY 4spd shifter was a pistol grip.

Post a photo of your tag. We can decode the whole thing and also the Build Sheet too. The tag should be a D21. All D21 in 1970 should be a Pistol Grip.

Thanks for the replies. Yes it's a d21 on the tag. I'm not sure if the build sheet is there or not (hopefully) as the car won't hit my place for another week yet.

Why would a shifter be on a fender tag?

All e-body 4 speeds are pistol grips. Period.

I had always thought that the pistol was standard with a 4 speed in the e-body but then I saw the code j42 (for optional pistol grip shift handle from 70 -74) and it made me wonder if there was a a different handle I hadn't seen before.

Thanks Grizz. I regretfully sold my Demon and thought I would get out of old cars entirely- turns out I can't. You find out what things you really love in life when you take them away for a while- I guess old mopars is one of those things that I felt a void without.
The new car is a old drag/pro street car that will need to have all the good stuff put back on to be something special again but for now it should be a decent play toy. No its mot yellow- currently orange but orig was unfortunately F8
According to my decode sheets j45 is hood pins with lanyards and j42 is pistol grip- but who's to say my chart isn't wrong.

WAG - early in the development of the 1970 vehicles the "PISTOL GRIP" was being considered as an OPTION, maybe on A-bodies or maybe across the A/B/E-body lines - for whatever reasons in the end it was made STANDARD on all B/E-bodies with the 4-speed manual transmission.

there is a location for it on a b'cast sheet - I've never seen it used scope
