The previous owner of my 91 standard trans, 360cid, W250 did some real hack job wiring that I need to clean up. I have never owned this year/style of Ram before and I have no idea how the stock engine bay wiring and routing looks. Can someone show me a pic? Im mostly concerned with voltage regulator placement and main harness routing/support. I can figure out wiring from the FSM, but it doesnt show pictures of routing and placement. Also, does a 91 360 use a ballast resistor? where is it located? Thank you in advance!

Those alternator's have the voltage regulator built into them, and you have some crazy hack job that you inherited.

Edit... I may be incorrect about ALL of them having the internal regulator, but on a side note the external regulator is not going to work without the case being grounded.

IIRC, the PCM handled regulator duties in those years. 2¢

What a mess. I hate those kinds of messes. Special place in hell for hack owners like that.

Charging is controlled by the computer from 88-up 5.2 and 89-up 5.9 trucks. Usually throws a code 41. The external regulator is a common fix, but its supposed to be on the firewall and grounded case to the firewall, not just dangling on the valve cover.

91 should not have a ballast resistor. Its all ECM controlled ignition.

Should be exactly the same wiring from the last half of 89 5.2/5.9 trucks until 1991 5.2s and 1992 5.9s.

The 88-early 89 trucks used a 60 and 14 pin combo harness plug in at the ECM, whereas late 89 -up trucks used a 60 pin plug at the ECM

What is code 41? What happened that made the previous owner splice in a voltage regulator?

So what is the solution? Buy a new ECM? I've seen eBay ads for dodge ECM rebuild services. I've never had to deal with ECM issues before

Those rebuilt PCM's are really dicey. I think I'd mount the regulator and rewire it neatly. 2¢

Do you have to pass an inspection where your at?
Unfortunately not an option for most,
but I yank the whole mess and re-do it as if it was a '72.
Parts are all available here, over the counter.

I have mechanical Aptitude.
I can screw up anything.
