I know it's been asked before about putting a 6.1 cam in a 5.7,I've asked myself. What is the general consensus as to what degree of advance it should be installed at? I've read 4,6 and 8 degrees, guessing it differs to application.Mine will be in an ,04 Durango and in an otherwise stock engine.I started to gather parts to rebuild my blown up 5.7 in my Durango, but found a new Mopar long block that had a 6.1 cam installed, but with the OE chain.I plan on using a Crower or Comp Cams adjustable set to be able to degree the cam.
Thanks for any advice~RT

I've read 8 degrees advanced from where the factory put it. I think the LSA is 117 ish and it was installed at 121, so 8 degrees advanced from 121 is 113 ICL

I put a 6.1 cam in my 5.7, but I just installed it straight up. am I in for problems? I never heard anything about advancing it. I haven't started the motor yet, but it is installed.

The cam timing for the 6.1 will lose bottom end power in the 5.7,bleeding off cylinder pressure I would assume.I bought a new Mopar longblock that has a 6.1 cam installed and the previous owner swapped the cam and used the stock timing set.I want to adjust before install also.I've read 4,6 and 8 degrees advance for the 6.1 in a 5.7.It probable depends on car weight and gearing as far as how far. Most I've read leans toward 8 degrees, mine is going in a stock 2004 Durango aka HEAVY!

Can you just advance the timing with offset keys ( if so, who has them?). Or do I need a high dollar adjustable timing sets?

I don't know if there are offset keys available but an offset bushing for the (drilled) cam gear I have seen. would be an inexpensive option.I will look for a link.

I'm still looking for the cam degree bushings,I saw them somewhere,or possibly someone made them.I have Hemi cam out and will measure the dowel pin vs the standarn SB/BB Mopar dowels, maybe they work.Or possibly another off the shelf set for another manufacturers engine.

I found this,Crower has them listed for their timing set up to 6*.No reason it cant be installed into a drilled stock gear.Still on the hunt for the 8*bushing.

What was the conclusion on this... What did you end up doing. I have a 04 5.7 with VVT pistons eagle heads and a 6.1 cam. Im putting it in a 78 D100 with a stockish 727 and 323 gear... Im thinking advancing it also, but the question how far...According to the Larry Shepard g3 hemi engine book,A stock 6.1 cam has a 108 deg centerline and a eagle 5.7 cam is around 114 deg

The 6.1 cam has an LSA of about 117, and an ICL of 121, not 108

John, degree cam and find out where it is. I rarely trust books. If it ends up where WO23 says, you will need to do something

The numbers I quoted are from a bunch of guys on LXForums that have measured it FWIW.

The Cam was sitting at 121.5 ICL at tdc . this is a 04 5.7 with 09 Eagle 5.7 pistons and eagle heads.. 8 degrees from the 121.5 figure would be 113.5 ICL....Just out of curiousity I advanced it one tooth and put the ICL at 107.5.. Got to be a what to move it and even if I do, I will have to check the intake valve to piston clearance . At this point before I go further, I am wondering if its even worth it or find a cam with different specs.. Anyone one here got any opinions on this

So the Larry Shepard-written book is WRONG. Surprise, surprise!

He's the guy who told us about the "thinwall" late blocks.

He's the guy who told us that all we needed to choose a camshaft was the lift because we were too stupid to understand 0.050 lift duration.

He gives engineers a bad name. Yet he still keeps getting published. He's like the writer who calculated the ET for a 1.000G acceleration from start line to finish line and came up with the quickest ET possible. I don't remember what it was, but probably hundreds of thousands of quicker ETs have been run.

End of rant.

R.
