I have read that there are "bosses" that have to be removed to run a mini starter on an early 5.7. There are two threaded areas on the lower right of this picture. Is this what is being referred to? If so, how much needs to be removed?

Those are them, yes. Cutting them down even with the edge of the pan rail is a good start at making some mini starters fit...

Anything special about doing it? The engine shop wants to do it before they build the motor. Cut-off wheel and 2" sander?

That'd work perfectly. Shouldn't take more than 20 - 25 minutes to do a nice clean job...
