Hello, Gents.
The left rear wheel in the Power Wagon has been locking up recently so a brake job is in order. I assumed that being a W200 that it would be a 3/4 ton with the common 12"drums. The guy at NAPA brought out the drums that I expected that I needed along with shoes and a hardware kit. $200 later, I was headed home.
I pulled a wheel and noticed that I had a drum that seemed unusual to me. I had a 74 Dodge Camper 9000 that had the beefiest rear brakes I'd even seen on a truck that wasn't a dually. I learned that the Camper 9000 was a heavy duty 1 ton with single rear wheels.
This 3/4 ton truck uses a rear drum that has the hub built into it like the 9000 did but it isn't exactly the same. Rock Auto does show 2 different designs but I hate to buy stuff online that I'm not certain about.
Anyone have any insight on this?

The last 2 listed at Rock auto are for 12x3" brakes, you should have 12x2 1/2".

The drum has the inner and outer wheel bearing in it. The wheel studs are pressed into it too. This drum uses 8 1/2"x20 wheel studs.
It turns out that I did have the 12 x 2 1/2" shoes. Also, when I removed the drum, the shoes were fine and the only thing that seemed out of order was the cable that runs to the star adjuster was off the guide at the rear shoe. I sprayed the heck out of everything with Brakleen, reattached that cable and put it back together. Oddly, it stops just fine now.
I just find it strange that the NAPA and RockAuto files show drums that I have not seen used before.

One of the advantages of buying a Dodge, back in the "old" days was that Dodge would automatically do parts upgrades as better parts or systems became available, and not wait until the end of the year model change to incorporate those changes, like most of their competitors did.

One of the problems with Dodge trucks was that they made changes during a production year rather then waiting until the end of the model year. Kind of a double edge sward. Often you didn't know which version you had until you took it apart. Its a really big problem on bigger trucks and RV chassis.

The biggest problem with the Dodge process is that there could have been more then 1 change in a model year! Maybe the "new and improved" wasn't so "improved" or there wasn't enough supply to meet the demand. Dodge may have reverted back to the original design, or they may have installed another new design. Are we having fun yet?

I believe someone at some warehouse found a stash of Dodge brake drums & parts from a short run model year, and decided to sell them off as an option for that year, and everyone that deals with that warehouse offered the "optional" parts.

The one saving grace of the Dodge process, is that usually, the "new" and the "old" parts are interchangeable as a unit. The change took place on the assembly line, so as the parts came down the line, the old parts were converted to the new parts, which means a person could resort back to the old parts (or convert to the new parts) by changing whatever parts were required per unit. The biggest problem is, you have to figure out what all needs to be changed to make the "other parts" work. Gene

I can see that.
Today I was at a self service junkyard in Rocklin. There was an 82 D 350 with brakes similar but not identical. I could have taken the entire assembly including backing plates and swapped it over. That is what I have done in the past.

I put a complete "full floating axle" from an '84
under my '76 3/4 ton, when the bearings failed.
Lack of maintenance on my part.
Lucked out and got a better ratio in the deal.

I have mechanical Aptitude.
I can screw up anything.

Nice truck but I was hoping for pics of the hub and drum.
