And the sign says, you will be towed. In a strip mall.

But he ignores it, and goes back later and his 2004 Miata is gone. Now get this. Call police, no record of tow. Five days later the car is found by the police 10 miles away in another parking lot.

All he can think is, someone found the 'hide a key' and took it for a joy ride. The key was duct taped but hanging down. Nothing missing nothing damaged.

(This is just a random life post, and nothing to do with Mopars!)

If someone took it for a joyride, they wouldn't have put the spare key back on the duct tape. Maybe the tow company got a good call while they were on their way and dropped it and forgot to go back for it?

A Miata? Maybe a good gust of wind came through and blew it away.

there have been several cases around here where cars have been used for drug deals. someone takes a car, makes the deal, and returns the car. noone knew about this until one suspect wrecked a car.

IMO your buddy deserves to be towed.

Glad he found his car...untouched?? If so then I have a tow truck theory. Read below. lol

I have small parking lots, I have to post them that if you leave your car on my lot it will be towed without prior arrangements. The signs are provided by the towing company around here normally so folks know where to find their towed car.

Without the sign I can't touch your broke down car in my lot for as long as you want to leave it sit there.

Some businesses have agreements with towing company's who provide the signs to exclusively tow cars from no parking areas and or abandoned vehicles off there lots.
Some towing company's are aggressive because they get storage fees until you pickup the car. All they have to do is see the car parked illegally and they can tow it out of there. Now a days I am sure they take pictures and more to protect themselves.

Other cases can be a "get it off my lot!" "I don't care what you do with it". So the tow truck driver goes 10 miles up the road and abandons it at another parking lot to get it off his hook because he don't feel like doing the paperwork to tow the car? Let the next guy worry about the car.
Or like you all said something better came up and he dumped the car. Either way I bet no paper work was turned in!

When a towing company tows your car from a parking lot that has been posted the cops don't need to know or care if they tow your car. Lots of tows are without a police report.

My thoughts.

Your buddy probably parked it ten miles away from where he was going so no one would see him driving a Miata! Maybe he was drinking to forget he owns a Miata, and forgot what parking lot he tried to abandon it at. Just saying!

when i was in the tow business--the lot had to be posted by the tow company--they could only tow on a signed complaint--the police had to be notified as soon as the tow driver could safely do it-----these were PUC rules---not some informal maybe i will do it when i feel like it----your tow license--business license could be pulled----no more income--big lawyer costs--civil penalties...

iagree for the most part. But after a while sh!t happens.

I know several people in the towing business and have ridden along many times years ago. It gets interesting sometimes.

No offense, but around the DC metro there are so many predatory towing rackets in dumpy shopping centers that are completely empty. The owners of these lots are scum and have pissed off any potential customer base. You co in their store, shop, then walk off and get towed.
There is one near a restaurant/bar and none of the stores in the strip are opened past 9PM, but they are marked no parking except for customers. Most assume that only applies during store hours but no, they wait for the restaurant overflow and tow. Probably wanted money from teh restaurant and did not get it and is spiteful. Again, an empty lot!

Had a long time vacant warehouse across the street from oiur warehouse. Often parked trucks/trailers in the paved swale area. We had a 26' travel travel trailer sitting there one day, when we returned from lunch. The Tow company had just installed "No Parking tow away" signs. The tow truck was hooked up to my trailer. I blocked the tow truck with my truck, told one of my crew to go inside the trailer and remain there ( something about not towing an occupied vehicle?) told another guy to go get my forklift, I unhooked the trailer from the tow truck, The tow truck driver said I "couldn't do that". I said "really?" I used my forklift to wiggle my trailer out while the tow truck driver was on the phone with his office, asking what he should do, He then told us he was calling the police. "Really? Parked my trailer inside my fenced in yard, decided to take my crew out for another snack, and was driving away as the police turned onto our street. The end. laugh2
