How do you read date codes on power steering boxes? Per the picture below, the date on this box is "9299". So is the correct date the 299th day of 1969, or is it 9-29-1969?

Thanks everyone.

Oh
There is also another date stamped into the box elsewhere.
I remember a flat area on mine that was stamped 1019 and that goes along with all the other date stamps on the car. If I remember I will look for a photo.

see if this works. In the orange square is where my date stamp is. Hard to see with this photo but it's there. You can see it faintly.

That's probably the assembly date

Thanks everyone. I do not see an assembly date stamped into the pad next to the valve outlet on the top of my box.

Tom - I was hoping to find a box with a date in the October range since my car is a B21 SPD. Not sure if you have one that’s a little later.

Which brings me to another question: If a box was cast in Oct-Dec, how did they represent the 2-digit month on the box? It doesn't appear as though there's enough room for a 2-digit month, 2-digit day, and 1-digit year (5 digits total). It looks like they only have room for 4 digits. Did they switch to a letter code for the month, like A289, as an example for Oct 28th 1969?

Rob

Rob,

I think they did it all with numbers. I have plenty of cars to check and have some extra boxes but as usually I'm not home right now.

Thanks, Chris. If you (or others) could share some pics for what this would look like, that would be really helpful.

I would say probably 30-60 days in advance of the build. I'm sure this one is within range. For me it's just a preference thing.

5carguy = Based on the logic of reading the casting dates above, it looks like your date is 2-42-7, which obviously doesn't make any sense. That is an interesting date. What is the year and SPD of your Cuda?

RusTy/SE - It appears as though your date is 10-24-9, which makes sense as Oct 24th, 1969. If that's true, it looks like they did squeeze in an extra character for a 2-digit month.

Look at the part number on the box - that's not a 71 part.

That is a box dated the 242nd day of 1977. The box part number is incorrect for a 71 car, it has obviously been changed out. Looks like the dating of these boxes changed between 1971 and 1977.

I didn't recognize that part number either, but figured it was not 70/71.

Oh don't jump too quick. There is a large slowdown in 71 production vs. 70, so I have seen a lot of dates that are far off in 71.

Look if there is an assembly date first.

not to steal your thread here. But I too am looking at my date code on my steering box and have questions!My 71 cuda is the same date 2/3/71 and here is the box in my car. I cant figure out the date! Can someone else? I also read in Olas new cuda book, that approximately on February 1st the 340 cars are suppose to switch over to quick ratio steering. My 2/3/71 car don't have it. Wondering if the box was added down the road? I have no broadcast sheet to show weather it was a p/s car or not? Anyway here are a couple of pictures of my date stamp. anyone able to read this date code?

If I am reading correct....looks like this box was cast on 12/13/70 & assembled on 12/28/70.

Looks like 4/14/70 cast date and 4/27/70 (1170) assembly date. Seems way to early for a 2/71 car......but who knows.

Box off of my 68 Dart. Trying to figure out if it could be original to the car. SPD 412

G2267262
R1
1247

Code stamped into the pad...222G

If I'm looking at this right, was it cast on 1-24-67? Assembled on Feb 22nd?

Reving an old thread. Does a casting date of “150” = Jan 5 1970, the 15th day of 1970, or the 15th week of 1970?

Another revival on this. Unknown source for this one, so what date would this be with letters?

Just a guess here:

H = August
30 = 30th day
G = 1971

However, I just sold one dated August of 1971 and it had the traditional 8171 date on it.

Right, but the assembly date would not make sense either. I wonder if this is an early 60s version since the casting R2.

I thought that too but the assembly date starts with a D so that doesn't work
