I have a 66 446 block with stock edelbrock heads and TRW 2255 six pack pistons. I am running 10.1 compression. For the street I will run 93 octane, but when I go to the strip will I benefit from the higher octane racing fuel? I think it is around 105-108 octane. Thanks.

Higher octane fuel burns slower, so if it is not needed then it will not benefit you. With 10:1 compression and aluminum heads I would think you would be fine with pump gas both at the strip and on the street.

But, you could always do a test using both fuels and see if it makes a difference or not. That is the only way to know for sure.

Theres really no reason to up the octane unless you just
plan on being safe. Also if you up the octane without
adding some timing.... you would go slower. The cam
makes a big difference in the cyl pressure... when
it closes

You should use the lowest octane that does not cause detonation. With Edelbrock heads you could use the middel grade at the pump. The aluminum head helps the detonation problem.

I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.

I use the same pistons and heads on my 446. Hydraulic cam 242@.050. Need a couple gallons of 110 at the track or it will rattle.

Hello,

How old is the motor? Might have some oil contamination issues. I had the same problem when my last motor needed freshening.

I run a 10.0 comp 446 in my 63 with the 906 iron heads. I use KB quench dome pistons and it has nice quench. It will run on 92 with no ping at all even with 38 total timing. And I drive to the track and race on 92 or 93 pump. Do you know if your 446 has good quench ?? Ron

The 446 in the challenger has the trw sixpack pistons at zero deck, eddie closed chamber heads, .039 gasket, 484 purpleshaft cam. Its 10.2:1.
Runs fine on our 91 octane pump swill.

Mike,
If your cam is at least 235 degrees at 0.050", I think you should be fine with 92-93 octane all the time. If the distributor has the vacuum advance, you might need to either get it tuned, or plug the vacuum connection.
