Just read this entire thread. Between this and the experience doing Lita's '55 Buick My goal is to have the PrimerDuster in progress towards being painted as soon as my lease runs out and I can rent a place with a garage. Gonna use the Rustoleum Professional gloss white and flat-black a 6 pack hood. Didn't realize wetsanding would be as simple as dunking a block in a bucket of water. I'm also considering "Recarpeting" it with black Herculiner.

If I can block bondo in the door ding rash smooth enough I'll add a flat black Demon spear stripe.

To everyone who traveled here from other forums for this page, Thank you! Would you guys mind posting links to the threads about this thread on your forums? That'd be cool to check out.

I have a hypothetical question for you guys that have done it.

Earlier, someone said that the gloss doesn't seem to come back all the way after wetsanding. Someone also said that if you lay down a thin enough coat that you will get virtually no orange peel. If you were to do your 8 coats or whatever, then sand it really smooth, and then give it one final thin coat that lays down really smooth, and then go straight to polishing/buffing, how do you think it would turn out?

great but it would be much more work wetsanding at the end.

No, I mean if you do every step as you described earlier, but at the end after your final wetsand, you lay on one last really thin coat that lays really flat, and then polish/buff the last coat with out sanding. That way you maintain all the glossiness from the paint and add to it with the polish/buff. You know what I mean?

Thanks for the quick reply

well no matter how good you are with the roller, you'll still get some imperfections that only wetsanding will totally elliminate, if you want that perfect look lol. you could i suppose, but you'll defineatly get better results with a wetsand.

Oh thanks. I was just curious as to if that would be a way to help keep more gloss to the paint. When I do it I wont be looking to achieve a show quality job, I would just want to get it as good as possible. My car is gonna be a daily driver anyway so I just want a respectble paintjob. Besides, the pics that have been posted have plenty enough gloss for me, I was just curious about whether or not I could do that to keep more glossiness to the paint, not trying to have a mirror smooth finish, just glossier.

Fantastic pics!

I am pretty ticked off with home depot now. I was supposed to have the paint in 2 weeks ago and still nothing. Last week they said they received it but couldn't find the stuff anywhere! Bunch of idiots I tell ya.

I am gonna talk to them today and if they dont have it, I will source it at another store. So the paintjob waits another week

I'd give it a try, remember you can always wet sand it and then buff it. If it turns out acceptable to you, you will save alot of time.

okay, i just painted seven coats, wetsanded from 1000-1500, and tried polishing, and either I dont know what Im doing, or its not working. The marks from the wetsanding arent going anywhere and the polish doenst seem to be doing much of anything. HEEEEELp, all that work..

What marks from wetsanding are you talking about? There shouldn't be anything much visible except the microscratches from the sandpaper, and that will polish out easily. If you see more than those, you need to sand the whole thing with a grit like 600-800 to get it smooth, then maybe a couple more coats before going to 1500.

Yeah...I had the same problem. Personally, I don't think the "polishing compound" and orbital buffer are strong enough to take out the scratches from the wetsanding...

Here's what worked for me

a.) wetsand up to the 1500 as described in this post
b.) apply "rubbing" compound and buff off with a high-speed buffer using wool pads w/water
c.) apply "polishing" compound and buff off with a high-speed buffer using foam-type pad w/water
d.) polish with high quality wax.

It's worked wonders for me...I can take pictures if needed. Chuck

guy here in St louis MO. told me today that rustoleum will not be making the professional tintable base's amymore...he said there not selling so there pulling them off the shelves! there are over 100 colors you can get from the two different base choices. I just picked up the last gallon of Masstone base and had torquois mixed up for my 67 dodge d100 shortbed. With this topic being all over the net i would think we could call Rustoleum and get them to change there minds on pulling this stuff from the shelves. Hell i would think sales would be picking up drastically since this thread is all over the world practically.
I ve been following this thread since day one and all i can say is why would you paint a driver any other way!

69Charger props to you my gearhead friend, You sure was thinking outside the box on this one!

oh and thanks to all of you who have been contributing to the cause here with all your trial and errors!

I guess I need to go get a batch of my Plymouth White mixed up then. The Duplicolor spray stuff was close enough to not be noticible in the sun, and all I really need to do is my hood and bumper filler. My car hasn't been all one color for over 10 years now, I think she deserves it.

BTW, if someone hasn't sent this thread directly to Rustoleum, someone should. This is an OBVIOUS product application that they seem to have overlooked. They'll be selling the stuff forever if they'll just work with us cheap folks.

Clair
