These Predator engines are a different breed for sure. I finally have a feel for converter, gear, tune up, and potential performance. It's been running really good even in 8600 ft corrected air. Last weekend in 8200 ft corrected elevation, it ran between 7.59-7.61 all day.

That's fast! Is that about a 4.70 in the 1/8 ?

No, really low 4.80's. It has more in it when the weather is better and the barometer goes up a bit. It was 25.56 last weekend. It's also a pretty mild Predator deal. Less than .900 lift and 15-1 compression.

Glad to hear you're having a good time w/ it now! I know you've had some headaches lately w/ those Predator motors. Hope you keep getting faster!

I always knew they had the potential. The worst part is finding someone like Tony that had been running them successfully, as people like Indy were absolutely no help. And because Tony has been racing boats, it took me for ever to figure out the converter, gear, timing etc., that equates to the pavement. My 604 is ready now, and I will start next year with that. It made 1200HP, actually 1199.4.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess there isn't much interest in the Predator stuff here.

I think their pretty sweet, just way out of my league.
Maybe it's hard to compare, but what are the major set up differences (gear, convertor etc) between a Predator and a similar 572 wedge you've had?

Gear needs to be a tad more steep, at least with the 572, I don't know yet with the 604. So, from a 4.10 to a 4.30, I think it would help as they like higher RPM's. The timing is less, from 33-34 total, to 30-32 total. They like big carbs, 1250 and perhaps even bigger or 2. The converter should stall at least 6000, and 6200-6500 is even better.
The upside of these things are common intake/exhaust rockers, much higher flow, bigger cams are effective, they don't need as much compression but respond to more, and from what I hear they are very NOS friendly.
The downside is, don't try getting any info from Indy, they are more expensive than the B1 stuff, special headers, pistons, gaskets, etc.

Oh trust me, I have lots of interest in the Predator stuff and if and when the time comes to buy better heads then what i have it will be Predator heads. My junk has been sidelined for many years because of having a very busy job and having two kids to raise. I look at it like this, buy the Predator heads right from the start. If i only want to run in the 9s, mild porting and mild camshaft. The day i want to step it up, there's lots of room for improvement. By the way, good luck with yours.

would be fun to see that combo run in Bakersfield in the nice cool fall air that is coming! Glad it's running well and those are stout numbers up in the air. smile

First off congratulation on all the hard work and research on making these combos work. And you are right on the interest of MOST of our members. I follow these builds as I appreciate all the work and money involved in getting these combos to work even though at my age I will never own a set. Heck most of the guys kinda pass over even the B1 posts on here. You are even fighting a bigger up hill battle because you are racing a dragster. Most guys including myself are door car guys and when the dragsters come to the line we head to eat. Nothing personal but either you like them or you don't. I would quit racing if it came down to me having to own one even though they are " the best " bracket cars out there. I've seen guys that raced for 20 plus years and never win a race step into a dragster and go on a tear. Please keep up the good work and keep us in the loop.

Yep, all good points on the dragster comments, and no arguments as to the appeal of watching them run. I will say, even though I have won more races with the dragster, it's not as easy as people think, but a definite advantage.
I have spent a lot on research and development for Indy and ultimately Mopar, but Boatracer572 has the most helpful with advice and help.
Glad to see some are interested.

I have lots of interest in all the build posts too. Most of them are way out of my reach too.

I love reading them because it always amazes me how much I don't know.

Glad you are finally having fun and past the point of spending lots of money. That's a great place to be!

Same here. Good to hear you've got a strong running combination with those heads. bow

Thanks Tom., would like to see you get that 6.9x time slip soon, like we talked about there is around 30 hp more to be had with a cam change.... how many runs on the springs in the 572 now....

They have about 115 passes on them now. I just checked them all yesterday and they are all rock solid at 360 seat pressure. Valve adjustment doesn't move much either. Here's a pic in the trailer.
