As of right now I'm still planning on trying to build my own but came across this.

All I see is a 4L60E w/ a Mopar bellhousing. Cool.

After some encouragement here I've decided to try and build my first trans and picked up the step by step "how to guide" for the 727. Then I saw this and wondered if anyone has tried it and if it fits as easily as they imply. How it holds up. And a four speed wold be nice without having to cut the floor.

Everything seems to be there. I like the ' Slap Stick kit' option. $5.5K (stage II 550ft-lbs about 1000ft-lb gear box torque) is kinda steep though.

Yes it's a spendy install, but everything is included in the kit, transmission, converter, fluid lines, shift conversion cable,shifter conversion pcs for either factory floor or factory column mount shifters, TV cable, TV brackets, transmission crossmember, flexplate, poly tranny mount,speedo cable, driveshaft and U joints, dash board shift programmer, hardware/fastners, I did this install in a 71 B body, no tunnel mods needed as the transmission is basically the same size as the 727, the tranny fluid lines exit on the passenger side, but the lines supplied with the kit use the forward portion of the factory lines joined by compression fitting, the rest is basically bolt on, the OD is .070

You can roll your own with a quicktime bell housing. I do like to the looks of the A41 better, I wish they would sell that aluminum bell housing.

I emailed them a while back asking if they would sell the transmission alone, without the kit parts or controller. I never got a reply.

If money flowed like water, I'd have one right now even with my state in a drought!

As a profesional repair shop owner I say go for it! We replace more 4l60 based trannys than all other trannys combined here and I am a chrysler specialist shop. Some shop like mine will make plenty of money fixing that junk trans for you.

FWIW I have sold a quite a few a-500s and 518s that have ended up in B and E bodies with no floor pan mods. Most are under $2000 with a good converter, fab a crossmember, shorten the D-shaft wire in a couple switches (OD override, vacuume and gov pressure) and your done. All existing linkage works and cooler lines are on the proper side...

You can install an A518/A500 in a B/E body without cutting the floor. All you need to do is trim some of the stiffening ribs on the tail end of the trans, and make a trans mount. I designed my own and fabbed it up from plate steel. I can help if you need me to. I still have the pattern somewhere.

You also need to change over to 1/2 cooling lines and cooler from the factory 3/8 lines.

You will need to address the controllers but thee are several options already out there.

I say rebuild it. Chrysler's are one of the easiest trans to rebuild IMHO.

You are referring to 71 and up B-bodies (what the Original poster has), correct?

Everything I have read on the Internet has lead me to believe that pre-71 B-bodies require significant cutting on the torsion bar cross member, but I would love to hear that you have installed one in a pre-71 without having to do that.

Is it only certain years of B bodies that don't need floor pan/cross member mods for a 518 install? I just picked up a good 518 out of a 90 ram and plan an install in my 67 Coronet someday. I thoIght I read that the early B bodies were tighter in the cross member area than later B bodies? Clearancing a floor pan is no big deal but I'd be happy not having to cut the torsion bar cross member

Lots of good info here on 518 installs. I built my own controller, around page 8.
Having OD has made my car so much more fun to drive. It's nothing now to go for hour long drives without the annoying high RPMs.
Whatever route you go, get an OD.

I have done this on E-bodies and they use the same frames as the 71-72 B Bodies. It should be the same dimensionally on the 70 B bodies too.

73 and later B bodes used a different Frame & Transmission Cross member. I am not sure how much work it would take. The 69 and older B bodies were very similar and are probably not much different.

I have since made a steel mount but haven't installed the final revision. I make them myself but don't have time to do them as a product I would sell. Too busy to make and ship in a timely manner.

No need to make your own mount, check thread I listed above.

I have thought about this a few times. I'm running a 440/493 in a 70 Charger and the current 727 has never shifted all that great despite being rebuilt with 'good" parts.

My concerns are fitment without cutting the floor, floor shifter fitment and the fact that I'd need a big block bellhousing type adapter.

If that was all it was then there would be plenty in the JYs but there are not many, they charge top dollar when they do have one. That trans is GARBAGE in stock form at least but like anything else you could probably throw enough money at it to make it last a while. My father in law bought one new in 96, put 500,000 on it in about 8 years and we put in a new GM trans every 100,000 on the dot religiously. Usually chunks in the pan and various gears MIA. I never have atempted to build one I only learned to build the chrysler RWD autos because I was tearing them up when I did a lot of drag racing, couldn't aford to pay others to do em.

What really irks me about it is chrysler has one that works and can be done cheaper.

I have a customer in Ky. that put an a-500 in an early charger, no floor surgery and works great!
