Howdy
I just had a transmission snafu and since I'm already on jackstands with no transmission for a little while I figure it's a good time to replace the rusty banged out leaking 20 year old hooker comp's that are on the car.
I want to get the most out of the engine that I can, without sacrificing drivability and ease of maintainance for max power. I can currently barely change plugs #5+#7, but it's not too hard. I don't want to have to pull the new headers to change my spark plugs. My old comp headers hang a little low, which is fine with me, and also capture the steering linkage on the driver's side, which is ok too. I do like being able to change the mini- starter without pulling the headers.
My setup: I have a '72 4 speed demon. The motor is a .030 over 360 with a 4" crank and eddy heads. .525 inch lift cam with 230/237 duration at .050. 10.25:1 compression. Mostly for street use, but 13 seconds rowing a 4 speed would be nice (haven't tried yet...) I have 4.10 gears, 28"x10.5" tires. The carb is a 750dp with man. choke and a single plane intake.
Here are the choices I'm considering:
Hooker comp 1 5/8"x34" $180 black $409 ceramic -these are probably what I already have
Hooker Super comp 1 5/8"x35" $435 black
Hooker Super comp 1 3/4"x38" $509 black
TTI step 1 5/8" to 1 3/4" $630 chrome $704 ceramic/thermal barrier
So- from barbeque black small tubes to big tubes to step tubes with chrome or fancy coatings, from $180 to $705. Big differences!
The questions are: how much will I be leaving on the table with the small headers on a healthy stroker, how much of a pain in the butt will the big ones be to install and work around later, and are the TTI's worth it in terms of ease of installation and spark plug clearance etc.
I didn't find much with the search option, so please lets hear it, I don't want to regret whatever decision I end up making!
Thanks Kevin

I voted for the TTI's, the fit without massaging will be better, less hassels with install.

I vote Dougs. Same fit as tti. tti's are basically a copy of them with some small differences. Steps aren't going to make a big difference IMO. You'll be chopping up your z bar with either Dougs or tti to get it to fit. The down leg will hit really bad. They have on every manual trans car with either header I've ever worked on. Bonus, coated Dougs are about $530 Dougs pictures: http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=40645PS your car should run low 12's, maybe high 11's REALLY easy.

if you're considering the hooker comps, I'd look at the headmans. similar fit, but they're cheaper and made in the USA (hooker comps are made in mexico)
on my M body I can change the full size starter without dropping the hedmans, and I can change all the spark plugs, too. the #5 wire I had to modify the boot so it wouldn't sit on the header though.

I would not go with as big as 1 7/8's. We dynoed ours with a dual plane and a bigger 255/.57" cam, and while 2" headers were 10 hp better at peak, they were dogs below 3000 rpm compared to the cheapo 1 5/8's. I would recommend either the TTI's or the Hooker 1 3/4's.

TTI has 17/8 headers for standard head soon to released.
It's about time. The last time I talked to TTI, I asked why they didn't offer the 1 7/8" headers with 3 1/2" collectors.............Long story short, they had no intention of adding the bigger collector.

Any date when they will be released? I wonder if the end tubes will hang into the port like their step headers do?

I called tti they said early march. headers will only be offered coated.Hughes has two pair they say they look awesome (larger exhaust port window) Now if we could only get edelbrock to make a victor sb head!!
Ya but once we get eddy to make a victor small block head then we will be complaining about no 2" tube headers lol
