I bought a 426 street wedge engine a few years ago and just now working on it. Cam and lifters were already out of the block and in a separate box when I picked everything up. So I dont know which lifters go into which slot over the cam shaft. I've heard if you are re-using the parts then the lifters have to be placed over the same cam lobes or it will create problems. Is that a valid statement? None of the lifters appear to have unusual wear and none are concave.

Im not re-building for top performance, just want to complete a build that runs and operates before going after top end performance build. And my budget is restricting the quality of performance at the moment.

Yes the lifters should go back on the same lobes.I have changed them and not done it and have had luck. That was years ago though when it seems they made quality parts.Today i would either buy new cam and lifters or just lifters.Depends if you like the cam you have.Rocky

I dont know the first thing about cams and lifters. I wouldnt know where to start if I needed to replace either of them. Id like to keep and re-use all the parts I have if possible. I though putting new lifters on an old cam is just as bad as putting the wrong re-used lifter on the wrong lobe, no?

For a build that you are discussing, any of the kits from Summit, Jegs or Mopar specific vendors like Mancini, Hughes should work and be relatively affordable. Lifters alone could be done, but a lifter and cam kit would be the way to go, IMHO. I know you will spend twice as much time and cost if one goes bad because its on the wrong lobe. You will need to take everything apart, clean out the metal shavings, new gaskets and seals, and a new cam and lifters anyways. And hopefully the metal will not get into bearings and other parts. Been there, done that, no interest in doing it again. I would just replace cam and lifters.

Do you have any idea what the cam is ? are there any stampings on the end ?

That said if the cam is ok I would not have a problem putting new lifters on a known good cam and doing the break in procedure.

But if you have no idea what the cam is , and if it will actually be good for your application, then it would be money well spent getting the right cam.

running up my post count some more .

I remember seeing some markings but dont recall the specifics. I'll have to double check for markings and get back to ya.

THE RULE IS:

Used lifters go only on the exact lobe they came off of and never on a new cam.

New lifters are OK on a used cam.

New lifters ONLY on a new cam.

This has been the standard for more than 40 years, to back when I was reading Fischer and Waar.

Other things MAY work if the spring pressures are stock or close and you are lucky.

The only two reasons to replace a camshaft are:
1. You want a different one for change in performance/operating characteristics.
2. The lobes show damage, either pitting or rounding or have varying measurements when measured across the max lift point.

Thanks! I have read similar responses. And I just realized I am missing one lifter so I guess re-using the old lifters is completely out of the question. So what do I need to know when buying new lifters?

I'll take a solid look at the cam later to see if the lobes still share the same shape, roundness/lift point, pitting, etc.

So what do I need to know when buying new lifters?

Depends on whether you are using early or late style pushrods. The early ones have I believe a smaller cup that the pushrod sits in.

The late type lifters are IIRC quite a bit less expensive.

Summit cam kits work good in a mostly stock motor. They are pretty cheap and usualy cost as much as just a set of lifters.Ive used all of their cam kits with great success. You will have to probally change push rods.Pre 68 had a long pointy type. They only work with factory lifters.Summit also has stock replacement type push rods for new style lifters.Timing chain also if its old.Rocky

If they're solid lifters Oregon grinding can freshen them up for a reasonable price. For hyd lifters? I'd toss them and buy new... If you like the cam

Something that JohnRR hipped me to!: that a blocks' lifter bores are at an angle and the lobes/lifters conform to that and another block will likely not have the same exact angle & reusing them on another block can cause wear problems. As said I'd get a Summitt cam/lifter kit (they're cheap) & cut some diagonal grooves in the old cam journals with a hacksaw blade & use it to fit a new cam if it dont turn easy (likely it will here with used cam bearings but for the future) and keep several of the hyd lifters and JBweld the cup solid .015-.020 (whatever your preferred preload might be) below the snap ring & use em when dialing in a new cam

Update - The only markings i was able to find on the cam was 2 C 574. I measured the lobes and the Intake and Exhaust lobes were in tolerance except for the center 4 lobes which were out of tolerance. I dont have the numbers in front of me. And there was slight/minor pitting on some of the lobes.

So now Im worried about the cam being shot too.

Where should I look for a new set of cam and lifters and what lift/duration should I be looking for? Stock is what I am going for unless the price of performance parts is similar to stock pricing.

Summit Racing has 2 different cam and lifter kits that work great. The K6400 is basically a stock performance replacement and the K6401 is a slight step up in performance. The kits are $103.97 each. I have used both cams in 383's and 440's and I love the way they perform. Either one would work great in your 426.

I agree with elmor.I have used all of their kits.Never a problem. For a pretty much stock use the small one.The bigger cam is a bit of rough idle but has good street manners.Rocky

Will those two kits work with stock valve springs?

The small one should be no problem. The large one we pulled from my 440 and used in a 383.car was still running 15 years later. The old stock springs might be weak though.Rocky

Do you know which year and HP rating of your 426W? If not look at the casting date on the side of the block and the assembly date on the raised pad on the top left front of the block and post that scope Mopar made three different version of the 426W motors, two Super Stock Max wedge motors and a street wedge motor, the casting numbers on the block will help identify which block you have thumbs
As far as the old cam and lifters there is saying that works real well for me, it is "when in doubt throw it out" thumbs
The early 426 street wedge motors had a small camshaft, same cam and lifters in all the non Max wedge motors shruggy My message is the stock valve springs should work okay on a cam that has less than .500 net lift at the retainers thumbs

Only marking on the deck is "426". Casting number on the block is 2532230-2 and has a cast date of 9-15-64.

That tells me it is a 1965 426 Street wedge block thumbs Have you decided what to do on the cam and lifters yet?
