I replaced the dip stick tube after purchasing my 'Cuda. The original had been bent and broken. I purchased what was advertised as a reproduction of an original dip stick tube. After putting 5 quarts of oil in the engine the dip stick is still showing 1 quart low. Either I have the wrong dip stick or the wrong tube? Can someone give me a length on a an original 340 dip stick tube down to the collar where it meets the block?

I measured several SB tubes/sticks recently for a guy & to my surprise they all varied. If you get no answer & if you definitely have a std 4 qt SUMP pan I'd put 4 qts in with the car parked on a level surface & mark the stick at that point

For the tube 3418933 and 3462049 for the stick on most applications. The total length of the tube is around 7.875 inches long. I don`t have one to measure from the collar up. Did you get the tube all the way in the block? Can you just trim the tube to where the stick will show full?

BTW, what year E body and 340 motor? I think the early 340,pre 1970 motors, had a shorter tube and dipstick, maybe not confused

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

The 70 parts books shows 3418933 which is the same for 70-74 IIRC.

Length of the tube from the top opening to the top of the flair where it enters the block is 6.50"

Length of the dip stick from the underside of the stop rib that sits on the tube to the bottom tip of the stick is 16.75"

All original 1971 340. 1970 is the same.

I researched the dip stick tube in the 1970 Chrysler Parts books, did a search on the number (don't have it here with me now to publish) and found a well known supplier of 4-speed equipment & supplies in Ohio selling this dip stick tube by part number. My recollection is that he advertised it as being 7.75 inches long which seemed to be the approximate length of the my old dip stick tube when I put the pieces together. Maybe the dip stick I have isn't the original (but I doubt it). I could cut off the tube but that would require "banging" it out of the block without damaging it. It was a pretty tight press fit going in.

I will use ScottSmith_Harms info on measurement and see where mine falls.

Thank you for the information.

I found the total length of 7.875 online. I don`t have one to measure but I remember that to be pretty close. I recall that the mopar ones had a part number on them but I may be wrong. You could use a dremel with a cutoff wheel and stick something down the tube to catch the fragments and use a vacuum to suck up most of it then remove the it. That almost seems to be the easiest solution other then maybe you have the wrong stick.
