I blew up my small block at the end of the season so I'm moving to the Gen 3 platform.

I'm a bracket racer who makes 200 runs a season on average. My small block made 625 hp or so, and my goal is to make closer to 700 with this Hemi.

This is what I have gathered so far. Still waiting on the pistons to show up but everything else is in my or the machine shop's possession.

2004 5.7 .010 over bore
ARP Main and Head Studs
4.050 SCAT Crank
Scat H beam rods
Custom JE pistons, 15cc Dome, shooting for 13:1
Cometic head gaskets
Apache heads with some porting
Custom Camshaft 258/264@.050, .620/.630
Ritter intake, Dominator Flange, short version
Stock lifters and valvetrain
My trusty E85 1050 Dominator by AJ Casini
MSD 6 hemi with the 06+ style coils to fire it.
727, 8" Ultimate converter that flashed to 5800 behind my 450" small block.
4.10 rear gear for now.

My goal is to run 10.0's at 3350#. If its faster that's cool too. Will it happen, I dunno, but we're gonna find out. If it doesn't, I have shoe polish.

Still need to acquire headers, oil pan and other little items as we begin assembly.

For better or worse I'll share what I learn as we go and how it runs. Shout out to Ray (sixpackgut) and Rod (Just-A-Dart) for their help selecting pieces for this deal and sharing what they have learned.

I'm thinking it would exceed your expectations. That cam and those heads will make some serious steam.

molnar 4.05 crank
molnar H beam rods 6.125 long
Diamond pistons 3.937 bore 14.6cc dome
Apache heads
hughs 5422 intake
holley dominator
MSD6 hemi ignition with harness's for both the 05 and down coils and the 06 and up coils (Also have the Holley Dominator FI system)
224/228@0.050 0.547 /0.550
Th350 5600 converter
Ford 9 inch 4.10 gears
weight should be about 2300lbs
ARP head and main studs

not sure of the header brand because I bought them off craigslist

That is a very similar build other than the cam. What are you putting it in that weighs 2300? Roadster?

it will be really great when there is a bunch of us to compare notes with. For a while now, its only been Me, Steff and Rick that have been able to ask each other questions about things and I have learned a lot from those guys so it should only help the more people we get to get info from.

The one day when me and Steff were at the track together, When Steff started his car, me and my friends all looked at each other and said the same thing. They sounded exactly alike.

Tall order for sure, but I think if you open the heads, at that compression, you might be there. I have been contemplating one, but I see so few bracket car builds. I averaged a little over 100 passes on my car, and +50 in other peoples cars this year....We had a bunch of rain outs, so it was a light season...I will follow the build, hope you include pics...

Looks like it will be good bracket race engine.

But I think HP with the parts in that list is more like 600-640HP

That intake needs lots of work. (A blend job will not fix it. )

Can you share any pictures of the ports and chamber after porting?

Looks like it should make some power, its a little less inches but similar to this build from hugheshttp://www.hughesengines.com/TechArticles/21740hpgen3hemi.php

For comparison sake I had a 390 LA engine in this car before. It had 2 points less compression, 11:1, a similar sized solid flat tappet. And heads that went 280@.600
That combo went 10.75@123 on pump gas.

2 points more compression, 75 more CFM of head flow at .600 and some corn juice fueling it. How much ET is that worth??? Hopefully enough haha.

Car is only legal to 10.00 as it sits....

Pistons finally showed up last week so got the block bored and honed to size.

Owner of the shop was happy we used the torque plate, he checked it after finishing with a bore gauge and noted it moves about .0008 with the plate not bolted down.

Will begin our mock up next week.

One question?
Would it wise to deburr the top of the piston? They LOOK like they have shape edges.

They do look nice, but I agree also. You can't go wrong making sure everything is deburred, and smooth. Less chance for detonation. Looking forward to hearing how it runs. I hope it goes exactly what you want. I think it will.

That piston looks like detonation city, as well as blocked flame travel and crevice volume up the wazoo. Would it not have been better to mill the heads some and get a much smoother dome shape even if it still ended up a tad less compression?

As for polishing pistons tops I use 1000 grit also and wet it but not with water but WD-40, it seems to clog less.

I guess I should elaborate on the detonation, those ridges beside the exhaust valve look like the worst offenders, they are gonna get real hot real fast as well as blocking flow of the last little bit of exhaust stroke and that will reduce scavenging. I would eliminate them all together. Then open up the spark plug divots for more access for the flame to travel to all surfaces faster and easier then put a big radius on everything else except above the top ring land obviously. I bet you will make more power and reliability even if it costs 1/2 point compression.

I would have gotten ceramic coatings on the pistons...oil shedding on the bottom, heat reflective on top and anti scuff on the sides

We did some mock up this past weekend.

Piston to Valve
.075 intake
.115 exhaust

My Apaches are 71.5 CC

Compression appears to be 13.5:1 based on our calculations, should work fine on E85.

Thanks for the pictures!
Was at my friends place and he used my drag pack intake to see how far off the intake openings were.
I'm assuming you port matched yours? Was the intake off by much?
His was off by almost 3/16 at the bottom. Mind you this was the early 5.7 head that is untouched and the intake is also untouched.
Would like to know what its like on the 5.7 eagle and 6.4 appache.
Thx Matt

I ported it to an Indy Gasket so it would match the heads. Never had a chance to check fitment before that, just went right to it. There was as much as 3/16" like you're saying that needed removed to make for a smooth transition in places, fairly consistent on all ports.

Yeah the carb is up there! You can see the tape isn't exactly the hood line as it doesn't follow the shape of the cowl but it gives you an idea.

That is with a 1" spacer and the short Ritter intake.

Where did you get the wiper motor block off plate?
What is the width of the engine plate?
Did you trim the width at all or is that how it came?

Thanks

Bought the wiper block off plate from a website that no longer exists.

Motor plate is as delivered from AEI, It could stand to be about an inch wider and taller. The Milodon pan will hit the K frame if you set it on the rails.

I didn't like the BBC option because the lower hose is on the wrong side, I would have needed a new radiator to go along with it. I've also had bad luck with water pumps and motor plates leaking, so this seemed like a good alternative.

$400 water pump and $300 worth of -16 fittings and lines.

As the kids like to say YOLO.

Haha, close to accurate! Ended up making 6 runs yesterday with the best being 10.28@131, 1.44 60 foot. Not bad for a 3500# ride.

Typical me I was in a bracket race so I didn't make any changes to the timing or carb, will have to start playing with it at the next available test session.

Good first outing, more to come!

Dustin, what was the other combo? in the first thread you said it was a 450. what heads were on that? I guess the converter doesn't stall 5800 behind this engine either

454" 4.185x4.125", Small block, B1-MC's, E85, 12:1, .619/.641 274/280@.050 "street" roller. It was a good combo til it broke a rod and cracked the main web in my R3. Lack of block availability turned me off from building it again.

Not sure about converter flash with the new combo yet, probably not 5800. I might go test Friday to answer some questions about jetting, timing, shift points etc.

Nice #s and good outing.
If memory serves me correctly you were looking for a 10 flat combo. I believe you just achieved this and more. Plus no more adjusting valves.
Nice combo and thanks for sharing.

Yes but I've never had much luck reading plugs on E85. I think its a little fat.

My car sits through the winter, but when it warms up I beat the living sh$$ out of it. Winter also lets me repair the broken stuff, like the 8 3/4 and fuel pump this year.

Dustin,
I am in the process of doing one of these for my 63 belvedere. I have a couple of questions for you, what flexplate did you use, does the old converter bolt up to it? What cam did you use is it something custom or available to purchase. Thanks

Ron

ATI flex plate. I had to drill out for the larger size bolt, otherwise it bolted right up to my old converter.

Camshaft is custom.

Haven't had a chance. Possibly this weekend if the weather holds out. It should be 3400+ it was R3 small block before.

All I know is that I had an unmachined R3 and a bare 5.7 block side by side.
My back would tell you that the 5.7 was pretty close to the R3 weight. 15 to 25 lbs difference.

So glad I stumbled upon this thread. Last weekend I broke a couple rods in my small block stroker as well, and have decided to go the exact same route. I'm sure I'll be trying to pick your brain along the way. To go the rest of this race season I'm just dumping in a stock Magnum 360 from a 98 Durango with a carb, then the fun will begin...

My machinist commented multiple times about how heavy my 5.7 block was. I'm not expecting much difference.

3480# with me in it this weekend at Mission Raceway in British Columbia.

It's within 10-20# of my R3 I think.

I'll call this post a reliability update, been beating on this thing basically every weekend and haven't had any hiccups. Probably 75 runs on it now.

Ran a new best this weekend of 10.23@131, still 3500# of machine here. Really need to work on the 60 foot as that was only 1.46, It wants more gear and converter.

Made 17 runs on Saturday double entered into Pro and Footbrake (won Pro, R/U in Footbrake). Another 7 runs Sunday (won Pro). 24 passes in two days, on Saturday in the late rounds I made 5 runs in under an hour. Trans was smokin hot, but the engine just kept chugging along.

Everyone loves the hemi!

Good job Dustin.
That is a well put together engine.
And congrats on those wins. Have you won enough money to pay for the build yet?

I think there is more in it but I haven't started leaning on it yet. With a 30" slick and only 4.10's the car definitely wants more gear and RPM. I'm possibly changing the gear later this fall, I'll test first with a 28" tire and see how it likes that.

Only thing potentially holding it back up high would be the camshaft which is installed 5 degrees advanced at 103.

It's what was recommended basically. Might throw a Manley chain in it next time the engine is apart.

Grandma owned, only driven to church on Sundays.

Bracket racer problems... can't always change things if you want to win.

What do you boys shift at? Ray? Steff? anyone?

Trans Brake set at 4500 or 5000 depending...5500 Converter Flash, Shift at 7300-7500. My engine is 401", 4.10 bore x 3.79 stroke. Motor peak HP is at 7000, Peak torque was 5200-5300 if I remember correctly.

Interesting, 9 more cubes, but 1/4" less stroke.

Need to put mine on a chassis dyno at least to see where the peaks are.

Cliff Notes: 515 HP to the Tire

Took the old girl to the dyno on Saturday, tried a few small things with jetting and timing, wasn't able to find any real power but it was interesting none the less.

The dyno doesn't like the converter, it flashes to 6300 and was causing the graph to have a giant hole in it, thus why the graph has MPH on it instead.

The engine never stopped pulling, on each run, peak horsepower occurred where I lifted. I pulled it to 7500 and it was still gaining. I don't ever plan to spin it beyond that so I didn't bother to rev it up more. In hindsight I probably should have tried 7800 just to see what happened and verified the valve train stability. I may do that in the spring if I make some changes this winter.

Hopefully I will be taking the car out in the next few weeks with a shorter tire on it to let the car rev more. With the 30" slick now it goes through the traps about 6900. I've got a 28" radial on it that should let it sing a bit more. The switch to a radial alone should be worth about a tenth, plus whatever is gained by 2 inches less height.

It was correcting after the pull so i'll say yes.

Upper right corner on the sheet it says CF: SAE.

The first pull it made 520 and then corrected down to 513 for whatever that's worth.

New best this weekend. There were issues with water seeping up near the 1/4 mile so we only got to run 1/8th. The track also hadn't been raced on in 2 months so it was pretty green and lots of guys including me spinning the tires. I made 4 runs total, only 2 of them were good.

Incrementals
OLD NEW
1.438 1.438
4.190 4.128
6.516 6.422 .09 better
104.96 106.27 1.3 MPH better
10.264 ?
130.94 ?

I estimate the car was going to run 10.10-10.12 ish at 132. Ricer math as I like to call it with just a bit of tire spin. The car went 1.41 the pass before this and 6.426 and should be capable of 1.3X using the transbrake. These runs were both footbraking.

Now the winter upgrades and diet program can begin.

What upgrades do you have in mind for over the winter?

Nothing Engine wise, maybe port the intake.

Mostly chassis work, rear discs and lightening the car a hundred pounds or more. The engine works well, need to make things around it more efficient.

Factory coils from the junkyard.

I paid $30 for the coils, 1 valve cover and the front cover. The second valve cover was damaged.

Original goal from first post "Run 10.0's at 3350"

Car went 10.03@134 this past weekend at 3380 LBS, on bias plys, through the mufflers. 29.50 baro, 83% humidity, it was around 1000' DA if I remember correctly.

Made 18 runs on Sunday, all between 10.03-10.11.

I'll wait for the cooler fall air to come around then switch to lighter oil, radials and maybe ditch some extra weight and see how far I can go before tech officials catch onto the lack of roll cage. In previous testing the oil was worth close to a tenth and so were the radials.

Pretty pleased with the Hemi, it's won enough money to pay for itself.

Car is working great!

What oil do you use regularly and what do you switch to for gaining a tenth?

Do you play with different trans and diff lube viscosity as well?

Capacity levels?

Any current video to share?

Thanks and keep up the great work!

No changes other than a new set of 29.5x105.W's and I took the throttle stop out from under the carb.

1.42
6.32@109
9.95@134.67

This is at 3380#, through the mufflers.

Very impressive build! I too am thinking of switching from the 496 to gen III platform. I do have a question on your cam that is installed at 5 degrees advanced @103, how did you arrive at that installed setting and what was the reason? More power down in the lower rpm? I see you race at different tracks, which one is your favorite? I'm on Whidbey Island and was looking for a closer track than Pacific Raceways! Matt

Thank you.

On the cam, it was designed so that I wouldn't have to buzz the motor to the moon to make power. The cam is ground on a 108, and was supposed to be installed at 104. Using the stock 6.1 Timing set there is no adjustment, it landed at 103 and we checked P to V and all was good so we left it. On the dyno, it was still gaining at 7500, so I don't think running it advanced has hurt power output at high RPM.

The Car made another 21 passes this weekend. Since I race so much it was important that the engine is reliable and I don't have to rev it up much.

From Whidbey your best bets are Pacific, Bremerton and Mission. All are good tracks, all have their quirks. Mission is the fastest if you wait for the fall air and are willing to cross the border. Pacific is home for me because its the closest. Bremerton is a laid back, family type atmosphere, very few accomodations, but a fun place no less. My favorite northwest track is Firebird Raceway in Boise, but that's a 500 mile jaunt so I only race there 1-2 times a year.

Have you made a bunch of passes with the G3?

What are your current thoughts with the G3 platform?

Has it been a reliable "put gas in it and go" type motor?

Waiting for some new in-car vids...

Thanks!

Just sarcasm. I made another 13 runs last weekend.

North of 300 runs on it. Just change the oil.

Sunday morning would have technically been a new best.

6.30 to the 1/8th, 9.93 according to my run completion, but I lifted to win the round.

Any more in car video?

Just for kicks, I would like to hear what the G3 sounds like from burnout to stripe to compare to the sb. The sb was a screaming monster.

Do you leave off of a brake?

The valve covers haven't been off since May of 2016.

I'll give them a look this winter as I'm planning to freshen the engine.

Well this season is officially in the books after yesterday. 194 runs on the year.

Also ran a new best yesterday, Incrementals

1.37
6.17@111.08 mph
9.743@136.90 mph

Only change from my normal bracket set up was tossing on a set of 325/50/15 drag radials. 2 inches less height and radial construction was worth quite a bit. The car still wants more gear, it likes shifting around 7300 but is only going through the traps around 6900.

This post is deserving of a "new best thread"

On the class racer forums, they say that you want to hit peak hp at the 1000 ft mark. So if your peak is 7300 than you want to hit that at 1000ft and than pray you dont break a valve or spring the last 320 60ft

There is a new best thread in race only, I'm keeping my updates here so everything is tracked in one location for people to follow along and to easily look back on the progress from 10.20's to 9.70's

I think 4.56's would be ideal for this engine, with a trap rpm of 7600+ that would take advantage of the acceleration early like the class cars do. However, with as many runs as I make I don't like the idea of leaning on it that hard. Someone else can have that honor and the glory.

Would be fun to put this engine in a lighter car. In bench racers theory, a <2800# car, 904 trans and more rear gear should be capable of high 8's

I'm thinking out loud here and your car is impressive!
Could it be that your heads are too big?
Wonder if less flow top end , which most of the time = more mid range , would work better?
I was always under the impression that there are two ways to feed a port.
RPM or CID.
Once again impressive car!
Matt

I am close to pulling the trigger on one of these. My Cuda weighed 3250 with an iron block Hemi and alum heads. Never got to weigh it qith the all alum 605 in it, but it felt lighter than anything else I have run in it...Figure one of these would put to 3100 or so....That little engine would run pretty good in my junker at that weight.

What compression is yours?

Matt

I have already posted on moparts my step by step port on apache heads and what to expect on flow. I do not make them big.

The stock port size is bigger than Chip's ports on his 572 hemi

Dustin when you first put this deal in the car, it fit under the Hemi scoop, right?

If I recall that correctly, what was the intake that you used??

Thanks!

Dustin, did you use TTI headers or ??? If so, can you get a diaper on the engine with them?
One more...car or truck timing cover?

Thanks!

2" TTI Headers

I have a Generic Summit Diaper on the car, most of which ended up melting to said headers. It's not the best situation, but since the headers basically touch the block and pan, there aren't a lot of options. NHRA requires me to have a diaper to Run Super Street, and they never questioned it.

Truck cover, modified to work with the motor plate

Thank you...I'm doing a similar build to yours and a customer of ours for my duster...finally.
I think I'll do custom headers so the diaper goes on without that problem.

I think that would be best. If you can run the rear tube through the inner fender like a SB hedman header you'd be in much better shape. Starter access and everything else is a pain with the TTI's

I tried running a diaper with my 2” TTIs and ran into the same issue. Ended up fabricating a belly pan lined with pig mat to keep the local track officials happy.

I love this build. It seemed to go together so much easier then most of the gen 3 builds I read about and runs good too.

LOL. Its to late for me. I have a 572 that is 3 hours from being done and a ATI heads-up type powerglide that could be finished in a day and I haven't touched them in weeks. A 512 mega block is sitting on another engine stand and a W7 R block in the corner. I'm racing my small block almost weekly but I sure isn't getting any easier to hit the track.

,

It is just a pile of parts I picked up. 4.100 R block 48 degree, 2 sets of used pistons, Arrow rods, Calais crank, roller cam and lifters. No w7 heads but it cam with Jessel rockers. This one may be for sale this year.

3-4 of them showed quite a bit of wear, they were used stockers off a core motor I had bought. I purchased a full new set and am using those now.

I'm going with new OEM rockers too...really wanted to try the Arrington rockers but not wanting to spend the $$$ right now...Only need enough power to run well into the 9's for now.
Looking like I'll end up running a front plate as well, trying to make as much room for headers as possible.

Freshened the engine this winter, new lifters (because I'm paranoid), new stock rocker arms, new timing set and a redesigned piston (same compression). Overall my builder was very happy with how everything looked, he said after 400 runs we could have reused the bearings.

The biggest change made was going from a 727 to a powerglide and switching from a 29.5x10.5W bias to a 28x10.5 Pro Bracket Radial.

First run out of the box was a 9.82@136 and all of the other 10 passes I made last weekend were in the 9.80's as well. I'd guess I lost about a tenth in ET, all in 60 foot. Previously the car went 1.37 60 foot, it now goes 1.42. The higher first gear compounded with only a 4.10 rear gear causes the car to lay on the converter for the first few seconds of the run until it can catch up and for about a second after the shift occurs.

This winter I might move to a 4.56 and make the chassis legal for the 9's, the track hasn't said anything to me but it's going to happen eventually. I'm licensed, I have all the safety gear, however the car needs a cage and window net.

Wow that is awesome news to hear about the structure of the motor. these new motors are a great cost savings. I am slowly getting parts to build one, very similar to yours, not as fast but respectable.

Glad your G3 and car have done well...

Why the piston design change, please detail...and are these shelf or custom units?

727 vs Glide, thoughts and impressions? Glad you went with the glide?

Keep the progress reports coming, much appreciated!

Any new track videos to share?

Thanks!

We replaced a custom JE piston with another custom JE piston. Same dome and compression, they're strutted at the bottom now instead of traditional style.

So far i'm happy with the swap from 727 to glide, its a better tool for what I do with the car. Super class racing, bracket racing etc.

Still don't own a go pro and have no plans to buy one.

Triple check out the SJ4000 cam on amazon. 60 bucks to my house. it appears to be worth the money butt I haven't taken to the track yet. worth reading up on it to see if it fits your needs.

Just a thought and oh your car is awesome!!
