Great project!

Is it just me or does the passenger door look to be a different color than the rest of the car?

It looks like your making good progress. Post some more pics if you have them. You can never show too many pictures.

Do you know if that car ever hung out in B.C. and if it had louvers? Also do you have a drivers side quarter/inner and door jam for it? If not PM me.

Your right, the passengers door was hit at one time before I bought it. After we striped the paint you could see the bad job the body shop did. I'm currently waiting for AMD to come out with there door skins.

Great project! Are those polished rims on the brake drums original?

Looks very tricky!

The interior is coded H5F7 (Green with cloth inserts). The insert has green, yellow and white threads. I had to send a sample of my old seats to Legendary. They had a roll of original Chrysler material so I lucked out there.

I don't believe so, I bought the 10" drums from a local Auto supplier in town.

It took a lot of time getting the Goodmark to fit. They put new AMD quarters on the challenger next to mine, The bodyman said they fit really nice.

Hi Dale, the R/T is looking good! I'll have to direct Collin S. to this thread so he can drool over the progress. He spotted the car where it sat in the first picture several years ago and bugged the guy to sell it to him. He was pretty shocked when he drove by one day and it was gone

I let him know where it went and that it would be done right so that calmed him down a bit. He was pretty bummed.

Hi Doug, I was really fortunate to get it back. The guy I gave it to 26 years ago really did not want to part with it, but he realized he was not going to get the time to restore it and he knew the sentimental value it meant to me, plus I had to show him pictures of the cuda’s restoration. When it’s finished I’ll let him take it for a ride.

Very nice. I do love 71 340 Challengers! Do you have the jack bracket that is spot welded on the top of the D/S wheel house? If not, I just got a nice repro from Wilson Productions.

What's your build date?

Keep those pics coming!

Thanks for the info, I have the original jack brackets which I'll use.
The build date was March 71. Hopefully by fall it will be painted and I can assemble over the winter.

Incredible progress. Looks fantastic. Just a few weeks ago, I was out looking for some parts. Saw a car in a garage that could have been your cars twin. IIRC, it was a 340 car too with rear wing from factory.

Keep the pics coming. Great motivation for those of us who are not as far along as you are.

Found a new NOS decklid. It did not have the rear wing cutouts. We added all the correct holes as what the old lid had.

Test fitting Gullwing afterwards.

Great job!! I had a original 71 RT 340 4 speed the same color back in 1977 until I wrapped it around a telephone pole. I kinda like the color.
Still have one that color today.

Looks awesome.

How well did the door skins look and fit?

Do you have the correct "DODGE" trunk emblem?
I'm trying to locate a vendor selling them.

Motor coming together, getting it on the dyno is the next step. After dyno we'll paint and finish dressing it up. If things work out right the power trian should be ready to install when it gets back from the body shop.

Thanks, it's coming along well. The car was a rust bucket, we had to spend a lot of time on it. When I was 16 beating the crap out of it I never thought I would pay for it 30 years later.
Who would of thought the Dukes of Hazzard would be a bad influence at the time.

Some information for anybody installing the new goodmark quarters. The hole for the fuel filler in not correct. The recess is bevelled where it should be a 90' degree. This causes problems with fitting the spout as well as the flip top cap. The screw holes don't line up either. Good thing we checked this before paint. We're going to cut out and use the old one from the original quarter. The AMD quarter looks to be the same.

Goodmark before, filler spout and fliptop won't fit properly.

old quarter fit

New quarter after

For the goodmark quarters and flip top caps you can grind the 4 corners on the bottom of the flip top housing at a 45 deg angle and it will fit flush (after its painted )try this first using you old flip top housing. It took me 10 min to make this fit. I got one of the early sets and IM surprised they have not fixed this issue. Remember to fit up the flip top with the trim ring.

Thanks, actually I had poor insight, I gave it away in the early 80's, was fortuate to get it back in 2007 from the same gentleman that I gave it to.

The bodyshop is called Prairiefire in Consort Alberta.

Every single piece you had done looks incredible. Mut be nice to pay and have it all done for you! I spent 3.5 years of weekends and holidays to do the same thing - myself - Acck!

Also loved what you said about your exploits at 16 coming back to haunt you - they sure did - but in a good way!

Keep em coming!

No we did do the floors, it would of been easier to use the one piece floor plan, but I did not want to replace the hump as it has factory numbers stamped in it, plus it was in good shape. The drivers side was rusted right through. The rear needed replacing and the passenger side was not to bad.

That old wreck isn't worth putting anything into it Stan. Karbashers is having a scrap drive next week, you should think about pulling the Hemi out and donating the body?

I thought Hemi cars were worth money? That and the body's not that bad just one small hole in the floor and the front of the quarters and that's just because the factory sunroof drain tubes leaked. But if you don't think its worth much maybe I should just sell it off.

Is it just my monitor or is the block/damper a different color than the rest of the engine?

The car's looking great. It's amazing how nice that color looks when fresh. Keep the pictures coming.

I'm thinking of putting a vinyl top on my challenger too, is the vinyl supposed to wrap around the rain gutter? It appaears to in your picture. I'm wondering how the trim fits on if its wrapped over.

There isn't much of a rain gutter on E bodies, but it does wrap over and the trim screws go over it to help hold it in place

Here are a few shots of the underside I took when I dropped in on Kori a few weeks ago.

Hoping to have the power train in by Christmas and a good part of the dash and cluster in as well.

I'm hoping to have it finished by April for Vegas.

Awesome read. I LOVE the gold/black combo. My buddies 72 charger rallye is like that and I can't wait to see it together.

A question though on the 340...are those the correct manifolds for 71? I always thought the 340 manifolds were more swept and header like. Maybe those were from an earlier year.

Again cool build...keep it up!

Thanks I didn't realize that. They don't look that much different than the small block log manifolds. Interesting.

Under carriage looking like a car again.

Factory marking put back on, we took lots of photos of all marking found when we disassembled the car.

Even have the paint drips

Hood pins & Emblems installed

Original hood had "95" written on it with a white marker.

New hood had the number added. There was several numbers and special marking found during the disassembly. All will be added.

awesome ride. I am also having a 71 done, but mine is only to nice driver caliber and mine will be a clone. my car had a similar gold on it when I got it. It was a repaint from the eighties so I am not even sure it was a mopar color.
Good luck with yours it looks great.

The only advice I have is make sure its sealed good. The first time we sealed it with the kit we found a gap on the drivers side center of the window, we could run a piece of paper through it. We ran additional sealant around the entire window. The Chrome is the orginal chrome we had repolished. The window was supplied by AMD and the chrome clips are aftermarket.

Having a problem with the left Goodmark inner fender apron. The shelf where the battery tray sits is not flat, when you tighten the tray in place, its 1/2" higher on the inside. Its to bad that this was not noticed before paint. You can't really see it until you install the battery. If we level the tray the battery hits the hood, not sure the best way to fix this. . Heads up to anybody else installing Goodmark inner aprons. Not sure if the AMD have the same problem.

Man it blows to realize this so far in. The only good part is that the paint is fresh and you probabaly still have some of the same batch. Maybe cut it at the corner and cut out enough metal to bend it down and butt weld it??

Car looks fantastic I had a 71 R/T that was that color gold and was an A78 formal roof package car. In the closeup of the suspension I hope you dont forget to tighten the lower starter nut

416 stroker from Nick at Compu-flow. 11.14 in full street trim. Seems like a new best every time out.
11.06 open headers----so far!!

Thats goodmark only? where does year one get theirs? I need to check mine I seem to remember when I bolted the tray on it tipped inward and wasn't flat but have not set a battery on there yet. This may be a tough one to fix? keep me posted on what you do to correct it. thanks javascript:void(0)

Thanks, Good eye. Actually the starter has to come back out for the inspection cover to go on.

Not sure if the AMD have the same problem.

would it help to move those ,what look like bolt clips to the outside of the inner fender. Looks to me like they are gonna cause the tray to set higher on that side. just a thought.

awesome ride. I am also having a 71 done, but mine is only to nice driver caliber and mine will be a clone. my car had a similar gold on it when I got it. It was a repaint from the eighties so I am not even sure it was a mopar color.
Good luck with yours it looks great.

I see nothing wrong with clones

Have you figured out what to do with the battery tray yet? I looked at mine and it looks to be the same way. I havn't put a battery on it to check though.

It's been a while since I've checked in with your progress. It's really coming along nicely. That's a shame about the battery tray, hopefully you were able to come up with a good solution. Your attention to detail is really great and shows in the work you are doing. Just curious, did you have your gas tank in or out when you were installing the engine/trans? I had mine out when I did my car but can't recall if I will have clearance between the gas tank and floor when the front of the car is lifted.

Right now we're leaning towards adding a 1/2" to the battery tray bracket and oblonging the tray bolt hole where it secures to the rad support. This will lift the battery a 1/2". It will clear the hood and be level. This is the easiest solution right now without doing major work. Were holding off doing this and working on other things, just in case we come across a better solution. This can be the last thing we do anyways.

Why not just put a couple body shims on the lower cross bracket? I bet that would raise it up with no serious modding.

Some updates on the progress. Dash installed. used the original wiring harness which was in really nice shape.

Got the trunk compartment all together without to many problems. still need a space saver tire if any body has one fire sale,

duplicating the original factory assembly line marking the best we can.

Got all the door and quarter glass installed. This was a painful task. The first after market window felts were garbage and did not fit. Bought another set that fit a little better.

Right now the plan is to have it ready for the Vegas show in April.

As of February things are starting to come together at the rear.

Was not so lucky on the front. The front bumper guard does not fit the reproduction bumper. Had to locate a nice straight original and get it rechromed. Thanks to Stan in Edmonton for helping me out with finding one quickly.

Another issue resolved was the unlevel battery tray.

Before

After

Rear sail panels and package tray installed.

Front suspension finished

Well this will be the last post I do on this thread, the car is finally finished and heading south tomorrow for the MATS in Vegas. This resto started in April 2007, 5 years later it's done. It started out looking like this.

And finished looking like this

Youtube video

I like to thank everyone for their encouragement throughout the restoration.

I especially like to thank Harvey Padget for giving me the opportunity to get my first car back. I know it was hard for him and words cannot express my appreciation.
