I just purchased a 39,000 mile motor to replace the motor I broke a rod bolt in.

It's a good running piece but I would like install a small cam before I install it in the car. I have a RPM intake, headers, 3500 vert and 3.91 gears.

My question is there a cam I can install without having to change the valve springs to bump up the output?

You might get away with the summit K6401.

If you are concerned about the stock springs (I would be) you might find a very good deal on a set of "take off" springs from an Edelbrock RPM or Stealth head... where the customer wanted a different spring. They can handle a lot more cam vs lo po originals. Worth a call to Hughes, Muscle Motors and others to ask.

I'd really consider a set of springs, cheap insurance and better performance. As for a cam, short duration & about 112 LC will help mask the low CR; lift will help it breathe & make power, and I'd look for at least .480, as much as .510.

Thanks for the replies.

I did find a guy local to me that has the tool I can borrow so that opens up the possibilities some.

Im looking to use a Hughes Whiplash cam kit.

Too aggressive for stock springs IMO.

yea, I spoke with them Thursday. They have a complete kit with cam, lifters and springs for $339.

I think this will be the way I go. This as a cast crank engine with 452 heads and it all looks pretty good other than I need to get some keepers for the new exhaust springs.
